This exercise involves planning the design of your sermon for an oral presentation. This form follows the
motivated sequence outline combined with the traditional introduction-body-conclusion format.
Introduction Attention
Often times when my kids have made a poor choice, we have a discussion about it. I can
always tell if they’re with me because they use active communication and they respond with
words of understanding but if the tv, tablet, or one of their siblings is nearby; they become
easily distracted. It could be lose of eye contact or they just change the subject altogether. I
then become distracted by the behavior and now I’m angry or frustrated. That’s what
distractions are meant to do; remove your full attention from something else.
Need
Believers can be distracted to divert them away from the thing God has called them to do.
BRIDGING SENTENCES
[Subject: Joy Modifier: Imprisoning]
Textual Idea: In Paul’s letter to the church of Phillipi, he writes about how his situation of
being in chains is not imprisoning his joy and he will be delivered.
Sermon Idea: The enemy will try to create any distraction to imprison your joy.
Interrogative:
What distraction attempts were made to imprison Paul’s joy?
Transition:
There are three distraction attempts that the enemy uses here to imprison Paul’s joy in the
text. These are attempts that we can look out for because the enemy will try to use the same
tactics on us.
Body Satisfaction
DIVISION 1 STATEMENT
Be vigilant of confinement that is meant to keep you from God’s path
Explanation Let’s take a look at verse 12, Paul says “what has happened to me has actually
served to advance the gospel” He’s been locked up for sharing the Gospel but because he is
committed to God (“in chains for Christ”) “his chains” have made others confident in Lord
and proclaim the gospel without fear”
Illustration Whenever you’re operating in His will, the enemy will hit you with everything
he has to try to deter you from your assignment. He wants to keep you confined to anything
that seperates you from God.
Argumentation
Paul is chained to a Roman soldier and he is uncertain of when or if his release will occur.
That’s not even his focus! He knows that he spreading the gospel is what he is called to do.
In verse 13, he says “I am in chains for Christ.” He doesn’t mean that he is confined but
that he is linked and connected to Christ. He isn’t concerned about his physical state. He

just wants Christ to be preached.
Application
We have to remember that the enemy wants to take your full attention off of God. He
thought he could do this with “the chains” and Paul would lose faith. Paul knows the God
he serves will protect him.
Transition (Div. 1 to Div. 2)
The second distraction attempt that Paul recognized was the behaviors of those around him.
DIVISION 2 STATEMENT
Be vigilant of envy and rivalry that may interfere with your relationship with God.
Explanation
In verse 15, “some preach Christ out of envy and rivalry” He knew that there were people
who had ill intentions while sharing the Gospel because they issues with him.
Illustration
It can be frenemies that always have a problem with your growth and elevation. They will
try to discourage from doing the very thing that you clearly heard God say.
Argumentation
Paul was able to discern the ill intentions but he didn’t allow it to phase him or remove him
from the path.
Application
If we can pray and ask God to show us the behaviors of those that are around us who have
intentions to shut us down. We must also be reminded that what God has for us, is designed
for us. No one can take that away.
Transition (Div. 2 to Div. 3)
The last distraction we must look for is someone with their own agenda.
DIVISION 3 STATEMENT
Be vigilant of selfish ambition that you or others before God
Explanation
Verse 17, they are not preaching sincerely but instead to “stir up trouble for him while he is
in chains”
Illustration
The enemy will use whomever to try to throw you off course. We so often selfish ambition
in the work when a co-worker or a boss tries to use you to get ahead. We can see it in our
spouses who may put their own selfish needs for us or the family.
Argumentation
Paul was able to see that there were people who were trying worsen his situation. Paul did
not take his site off of God. He knew the assignment was to preach. He was able to realize
that the gospel is still getting preached and that’s all that matters
Application
We have to stay focused on God or we will forget the assignment that was given to us.

Conclusion Visualization
The reason Paul was able to maintain his joy was because his faith was strong and he was
committed to God. He was able see the attacks and know that they were harmless.
Reiteration
We have to keep our eyes open for confinement, envious behaviors, and those with selfish
ambition. Paul did not allow these distractions to imprison his joy.
Action If you are the person that feels like its so much going on and you feel overwhelmed by
everything; ask God to remove any distractions that are keeping you from his Will.
