Fighting Salmonella in The Caribbean Coordinated Plan
Since the start of 1980, the Salmonella pathogen has become a matter of public
concern, mainly around the Caribbean region. The pathogen has resulted in many diarrhea
outbreaks and cases to both the tourists and local populations (Sehr-Green, 2004). Since then,
Salmonella has emerged as a threat to Caribbean public health. The infection is mainly
caused by contamination of food and water with a serotype. Throughout this course, I have
discovered two theoretical frameworks related to Salmonella. Firstly, the infections are
caused through contamination of food and water, and food hygiene promotes its spread. As a
result, observing personal hygiene when handling food and water using improved sanitation,
washing hands before and after defecation, and practicing are effective strategies to combat
the pathogen. Salmonella's theoretical framework is that most individuals with the infection
have a fever, stomach cramps, and diarrhea, with diarrhea being the most dominant
symptoms. Hence, individuals exhibiting these symptoms should seek medical tests for the
salmonella pathogens.
The group is composed of medical professionals. The medical scientists may focus on
the vaccine and test validation, while the nurses can communicate and convince the
population on the importance of vaccination. Each professional in the group may help combat
the infection by educating the public in vulnerable regions on the significance of observing
personal hygiene. As a Patient Care Coordinator, the Nurse could have to ensure that group
members inform the population about being careful to avoid contaminations and prevent the
pathogens from thriving. Also, the group professionals may help create awareness on the
significance of handwashing and administer vaccinations and antibiotic treatment to the
infected individuals.
An outstanding issue in the Caribbean outbreak was that communication was
ineffective at all levels, which led to a lack of collaborative actions and conflicting risk
3
communications. Also, resource variations between the healthcare providers and local health
resulted in delays in collecting accurate data for epidemiological examinations. As a result,
communication will be a vital element of the plan (Health IT. Gov, 2020). Each professional
will have to communicate how to combat the infection before reaching out to the affected
region. They can do so by embracing verbal communications, and meetings and when
reaching out to the affected communities, they will have to use the poster and create
awareness verbally. And they may also incorporate Electronic systems into the infectious
diseases surveillance systems to reduce the communication delay time.
Densely populated regions are the areas of concern for the salmonella pathogens. The
pathogens travel quicker in populated regions with poor hygiene. And as a result, individuals
in such an environment should be aware of the control measures to avoid infection. Another
concern the Caribbean residents should address is to have a clean water supply. Since
environmental and individual factors influence Salmonella's thriving, areas with dirty water
are highly susceptible to the infection. Hence, the authority should ensure piped water is
treated. Risk areas should understand the significance of observing food hygiene. Also, the
local authorities to address issues such as water shortages and pipe breakages.
The plan of action need may be implemented at an individual, population, and
globally in various ways. For instance, Salmonella pathogen victims should seek treatments
at an individual level while the rest population should consider being vaccinated. Also,
informed members of society should take personal responsibility for teaching about the
infection. On the other hand, at the population level, people should create awareness and take
collective responsibility for combating the disease. Lastly, on a global scale, nations and
international health organizations should fund research on Salmonella.
