The United States faced another tragedy on April 15, 2013 during the gathering at the

annual Boston Marathon. There were two terrorists who caused death and harm to many of the
people in the crowd and to those who were participating in the marathon. An event as large as the
Boston Marathon is tough to keep safe when there are thousands of people on the streets
cheering. Since the bombings, there are requirements that any large event have planning and
preparation for those involved in participating. The planning that went into creating the terror
that hurt so many people was well thought out. The two men had two devices that were
homemade pressure cooker bombs detonated 12 seconds apart and 210 yards away from each
other near the finish line. They clearly had a well developed plan, and it could not have been too
difficult to figure out as the course for the race was and is public knowledge. These men
Dzhokhar Tsarnaev and Tamerlan Tsarnaev were brothers and their attack was a lone wolf
situation. The emergency management failed in preparing for any kind of incident to occur, and
unfortunately it takes an event like this one to be prepared for the next time.
Mitigating and Preparing
To begin, all of the phases of emergency management are extremely important to be
successful in and to carry out before and after a major incident. To be prepared and prevent any
kind of attack is next to impossible without having all of the evidence or knowledge prior to it.
The events of the Boston marathon bombing attack were handled in the best way that they could
be handled. Unfortunately each disaster like this can only be helpful for the next disaster, in how
to take it on and have more success. Even though there were medical staff at the Boston
Marathon, they were not completely prepared for something of this caliber. In the article The
Initial Response to the Boston Marathon Bombing: Lessons Learned to Prepare for the Next
Disaster the authors state, “Although ICU resources were needed for many patients, there was
sufficient time to move existing patients out of those occupied beds turn over the rooms and

increase the number of nursing staff to prepare for the victims”(Tomberg, 2015).
