The three, crime, poverty and social welfare go hand in hand. When social welfare
programs are high, poverty is lowered and so is crime. USaid.gov says that crime and
poverty happen together normally, however, typically crime isn’t driven by poverty, but
inequality. It has to do with income inequality. The county I live in doesn’t seem to have
a huge income inequality because we don’t have any huge corporations around.
The ALICE program, Asset Limited Income Constrained Employed program is a federal
program to help those who may struggle. In the state of New York in the year 2018 the
statistics for poverty was 14%, people on ALICE 31%, and those above the ALICE
threshold 55%. In the county I live in, compared to the state, it was 11% poverty, 26%
ALICE and 63% above the threshold (United for Alice New York). As for crime in my
county, we have an A+ rating from crimegrade, and considered to be in the 99th
percentile for safety. Our crime rate is “13.49 per 1,000 residents” (crimegrade.org).
Social welfare, my county offers a program called Safety Net. This is, “A program of
financial assistance to needy individuals and families who do not meet the requirements
for Family Assistance or Supplemental Security Income (SSI)” (Tioga County Social
Services). Within my county, I think the three go together because the lower poverty
line goes along with the lower crime rate. Also, with the Safety Net program in place, it
helps keep the line decreasing.
If I was in charge of my county or town, I would make sure to have any programs I could
to allow the people every opportunity to take care of themselves and their families.
Nothing hurts a person, other than to see others struggle. I see it through the school
with students, and I would use that as motivation to help create programs to help others
be successful. I would work with the state government to help assist in creating these
social welfare programs and to do what I can to help with food, so the family can spend
their money on other essentials.
