Case Study on Immigration
The topic of immigration is something that has been talked about a lot since the 2016
Presidential election and is still a major topic in the 2020 election. Immigration is a topic that makes
people choose sides on what they believe is the correct thing to do. It is something that everybody will
never agree upon because every person does not have the same ideas on how it should be handled.
Immigration has always been a topic of discussion, but it has caused major divides when it comes to
Presidential candidates and who people are going to vote for.
In today’s time, the American dream is not the same to every person, but people want to come
to the United States to have a better life and to be able to provide for their family. There are ways to
become a U.S. citizen, but it could take too long and could cost a good amount of money. That way is not
always followed as people are crossing the border to come in America every day and come here illegally.
There are several major topics that go along with immigration such as jobs, taxes, health care and
education but I am going to be focusing on does illegal immigration affect schools and taxes. Gregory Hill
and Daniel Hawes wrote a paper about undocumented students and they said, “Illegal immigration is a
salient topic for policy makers and for local units of government who are responsible for implementing
policies. One particularly relevant policy topic is to what extent undocumented students affect
performance in public schools, and if undocumented students do have an impact on performance, what
can be done about it?” There could many causes that corelate with this. In my opinion, a major topic
that causes this is a language barrier in classrooms. When people immigrate over from another country,
their kids mat not know how to speak or read English. This in my opinion, makes it harder for kids to
understand the material causes the teachers and schools to leave kids behind in theory letting them fall
through the cracks because they do not know how to help these children. Spanish is a major language
that is spoken in the United States but many refuse to learn the language because they believe every
person should speak English if they live in the United States. A solution to this would be to teach children
when they are young a different language. Not only will this help language barriers but it will help them
in their careers one day because if you can speak to someone in their language you are able to
understand their problem and you can help them solve this problem. This solution is not easy though
because that means you must fund schools more that way you are able to get more bilingual teachers in
to help these students. Can this solution work? It could work in a major way, but it does not mean that it
will be done.
Charles Hirschman said, “Almost 13 per cent of the American population is foreign born, and if
the children of the foreign born are included, about 1 in 4 Americans can be counted as part of the
recent immigrant community. Immigration is happening all around us and we may not even know if
someone immigrated from another country unless you asked them. A problem is that when people come
over illegally to the United States taxes most likely are not being paid by that person because they are
not a U.S. citizen. This problem is what causes the fears of people. A solution to this is to come to the
United States legally to become a citizen. Even though this is a solution is does not happen all the time.
People have fears that illegal immigrants are going to come over to the United States and take their jobs
because they are willing to work for less. This is turn makes it harder for people to find a job which will
help them pay their taxes.
A way that people decide what is right and what is wrong is through their faith. The Bible talks
about things just like this. The Bible talks about many helpful things and one of them is Galatians 3:28
NLT when it says, “There is no longer Jew or Gentile, slave or free male and female. For you are all one in
Christ Jesus.” We are told in the Bible to love thy neighbor, but we do not always accept that because we
have different views on what the Bible verse could mean. In Biblical times, people would travel to
different cities to find better work for their families. Yes, there were still rulers and armies protecting
these cities, but it happened all the time. People would still have to follow the laws in these new cities.
Faith is a major part on how we should look upon immigration. We are living in my opinion in Biblical
times that were talked about and we need to turn to our faith and see what Jesus has said on these
topics such as immigration. Immigration talks will never go away, it seems like people talk about them
less until elections come up because they want to see what is truly going on with these policies. I do not
believe immigration will stop happening but there are ways it could be fixed to make it easier for people
to become U.S. citizens to lower the chances of people trying to illegally cross the borders into the
United States.
