This assignment requires you to read "Moral Criticisms of the Market" by Ken S. Ewert. Note that in his
article, Ewert is defending the free market from "Christian Socialists." He states their position and then
gives a rebuttal. Do you agree with the critique of the market in Ewert's article? Why or why not? Read
carefully and offer cogent reasons.
There are points and areas of this report that are unfortunately correct because when we look at greed
and the way people become influenced by the market who creates ways to manipulate peoples desires
into buying luxurious, homes, vehicles, jewelry or clothing in which at times forces people to go over
their income to try to keep up with the new and latest fashion, better known as keeping up with the
Jones.
Now, to use Christian views to correct the way the market values their costumers is truly incorrect,
because this is like asking a Demon what heaven looks like to me.
Companies don’t care what your economic status is, they make the prices of their product and created
sale positions for people who only job is to sell you or me the product. When it comes to a car sales man
will have a full team of bank lenders and accountants ready to approve anyone with an income and
credit for whatever vehicle they have as long as you can be persuaded to pay the fees you will have
based on using lies, deceiving you, making you believe this won’t hurt your other economic
responsibilities. Why? Easy, this large companies need to make sales to continue or maintain their level
of operations.
Now, is that greed, maybe but not always, I believe is not the major corporations fault how a sales man
does his work. Also, its not the companies CEO or owner that their company grows into a large company.
Many Christians would agree this could be a blessing for that business owner who worked hard to grow
his company and example of that is a place like the owner of Chic fillet who is a very openly Christian
believer, who not only follows the word of God, but makes his stores close on Sunday. He has been in the
Medias eyes for years after making very openly statement against same sex relationship and marriage. Is
he wrong for growing a company that is successful if he is a Christian? Not at all. How about all the
preachers with televised Christians net worth and millions of church members, yes this is the word of
God at work, but it’s still a business, is this wrong since many of those pastors are millionaires ? Nope.
Now, I’m going to school to get this degree and find me a better job, so if I apply to several jobs and they
all call me and I choose the highest paying job, am I wrong or too greedy? Not at all, I chose what
benefits me and my family. I just think people have been so used to controlling people’s decision with
religion, they believe being Christian means to be excluded from good things in life, the way people must
use their knowledge of God is to first of all use common sense. if you want something, save for it, if you
save for it make sure it doesn’t affect all your other responsibilities, if you finally save for it and
something more important comes up take care of what is important, before making the decision to buy
or not, ask yourself if this is a want or a need and at last life is too hard to be worrying about other
opinions, do what makes you happy just be responsible when doing it. God will bless you if your decision
is pure and right for you.
