Introduction
“Cultural Intelligence is defined (CQ) as the capability to function effectively across
national, ethnic, and organizational cultures.”1 A second definition for this (CQ) as “is the
distinct from stable individual differences such as personality, which describe what a person
typically does across time and across situations. And it’s also different from emotional
intelligence because it focuses specifically on capabilities in multicultural contexts.”2 Cultural
intelligence is so important in our current globalized interconnected society, and because we
are more likely to interacting with individuals from other countries with different cultural
backgrounds, customs, and languages.
Examining CQ is necessary because it is “a more reliable way to “predict how you will
lead across culture that your personality, age, gender, where you’re from, or emotional
intelligence.”3The purpose of evaluating the personal CQ report is to develop and improve
intercultural behavior. The Cultural Intelligence Assessment presented an eye-opening analysis,
which assessed my personal CQ Drive, CQ Knowledge, CQ Strategy, CQ Action, and their
subdimensions. As I reviewed my results, I see some deficiencies that warranted some tweaking
in areas that help facilitate outreach ministry in working with a multi-cultural community.
In this paper, the discussion will center around three different points. The first point is
my personal Cultural Intelligence Assessments. Second point of discussion, the strengths and
weaknesses identified in the assessments. And third point of discussion, my personal proposed
CQ plan.
Personal CQ Assessment
The personal Cultural Intelligence (CQ) Assessment is assessed in these categories for CQ
Capabilities are: CQ Drive, CQ Knowledge, CQ Strategy, and CQ Action capabilities. This
assessment analyzed and showed me areas that need improvements when dealing with people

of different cultures and customs. These CQ capabilities present a description of how everyone
reacts or understands different cultures and customs of others. And the purpose of this
assessment is to give all individuals who interact with others the capabilities to improve their
understanding of multi-cultural differences.
The CQ Capabilities:
CQ Drive is defined as “the extent to which you are energized and persistent in your
approach to multicultural situations. It includes your self-confidence in your abilities as well as
your sense of the benefits you will gain from intercultural interactions. In laymen’s terms your
level of interest persistence, and confidence during multicultural interactions.”4
The CQ Drive has three subdimensions: “Intrinsic Interest, Extrinsic Interest, and SelfEfficacy.”5In
the area of “Intrinsic Interest: Deriving enjoyment from culturally diverse experiences,”6my
score was 84%. The subdimension of “Extrinsic Interest: Gaining benefits from culturally diverse
experiences,”7my score was 89%. And the subdimension of “SelfEfficacy: Having the confidence
to be effective in culturally diverse situations,”8 my score was 84%. Overall scoring 85%.
CQ Knowledge is defined as “the degree to which you understand how culture influences
how people think and behave and your level of familiarity with how cultures are similar and
different or your understanding about how cultures are similar and different. The CQ Knowledge
has 4 subdimensions: Business; Values & Norms; Socio-Linguistic and Leadership.”9 In the
subdimensions of “Business: Knowledge about economic and legal systems, my score was 59 %.
In the subdimensions of Values and Norms: Knowledge about values, social interaction norms,
and religious beliefs, my score was 84%. The subdimension of Socio-Linguistic: Knowledge
about language and communication norms, my score was 9%. The subdimension of Leadership:

Knowledge about managing people and relationships across cultures (Context Specific), my
score was 47%.”10 My total scoring for the CQ Knowledge was 50%.
CQ Strategy is defined as “the extent to which you are aware of what is going on in
multicultural situations and the extent to which you check and plan accordingly or your
awareness and ability to plan for multicultural interactions. The CQ Strategy has 3
subdimensions: Planning; Awareness: and Checking.”11The subdimension of Planning, my score
was 62%. The subdimension of Awareness, my score was 78%. The subdimension of Checking,
my score was 73%.”12 My total scoring for the CQ Strategy was 71%.
CQ Action is defined as “the extent to which you act appropriately in multicultural
situations. It includes your flexibility in verbal and nonverbal behaviors and your ability to adapt
to different cultural norms or your ability to adapt when relating and working in multicultural
contexts. The CQ Action has 3 subdimensions: Speech Acts; Verbal; and Nonverbal.”13The
subdimension of Speech Acts: Modifying the manner and content of communications (e.g.,
direct, indirect), my score was 67%. The subdimension of Verbal: Modifying verbal behaviors
(e.g., accent, tone), my score was 67%. The subdimension of Nonverbal: Modifying nonverbal
behaviors (e.g., gestures, facial expressions), my score was 67%.”14My overall total scoring for
CQ Action was 67%.
Strengths and Weaknesses
Completing the CQ Assessment of the four capabilities, which reveals numerous deficits,
warrants some correction on my capabilities for dealing with individuals from multicultural
communities. As an outreach minister, during canvassing neighborhoods I have encountered
many individuals from different races and cultural differences. One specific instruction I always
issue to participants is not to offend or disrespect our neighbors in the surrounding areas. But,

after reviewing the results of this survey I realized that I need to improve my CQ capabilities as I
interact with multicultural individuals and communities.
The strengths noted in this CQ Assessments were in the areas of CQ Drive, CQ Strategy,
and CQ Action. I have the desire and stamina to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ to all nations
and learning about different nationalities, races, cultures, and customs is a special interest of
mine that I would love to explore. Because this survey also showed my scoring total in CQ
Strategy and CQ Action indicated my capabilities for learning about different cultures and
planning strategies for working with these individuals for outreach and sharing the Gospel was
an area that I am qualified to complete these tasks.
The CQ Assessment survey also listed my area of weakness in this survey. The CQ Assessment
area with the lowest scoring was in the area CQ Knowledge in reference to business, values and
norms, and sociolinguistics. I love to study languages, cultures, and customs from countries
around the world, but I lack mastering a language which can be essential in working with multi-
cultural communities. Noting that this deficit can cause a problem, learning other languages is
my top priority.
Personal CQ Plan
Now that I have reviewed the results of my CQ Assessment and noted there are
numerous points or deficits to work on. To grow in the subdimension division areas where
weaknesses were noted, I plan to study more about other countries, customs, cultures, and
social and verbal behaviors in regards effective communication. To achieve this goal, I will
implement some action steps and strategies to develop my skills for sharing the Gospel with
different cultures. I will work to find opportunities to implement my CQ into actual practice and
broaden my cultural knowledge. I am willing to work, train, and shadow with other individuals
from different cultures to improve my CQ skills for interacting with others.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the CQ Assessment survey a tool that all Christians need to complete
before working with different cultures. As a person who thought that my knowledge of different
races and nationalities was above most scoring, but this assessment reveals that I have some
areas that need lots of improving and training. This intrigues me because I really enjoy studying
about different cultures and people. My undergraduate degree is in Biblical and Theological
Studies with a minor in History. So, learning about different cultures, customs, nationalities, and
languages is one of my favorite things to do. Do I have the capabilities to achieve these goals?
Yes, because its important for the spreading of the Gospel of Peace. So, if God sends me to
Africa or Loire Valley of France to share the Gospel my goal is prepare and learn the culture and
customs of the people in those areas.
