Abortion; the termination of a pregnancy after, accompanied by, resulting in, or closely
followed by the death of the embryo or fetus. (Websters Dictionary) A major case with abortion
is the Roe v. Wade within the debate of the constitutional right to preform an abortion. The
termination of a fetus can occur in multiple ways; chemically with a pill or by undergoing
different surgical procedures to extract the fetus from the mother. According to the Center for
Disease and Control an article published saying that 620,327 legal abortions were preformed in
the year 2020. The abortion ratio was 198 abortions per 1,000 live births in 49 surrounding areas
reported in women aged 15-44 years. (CDCs Abortion Surveillance System Faqs. 2020)
Today, abortion is looked at as a normal thing, and more people are trying to get laws to
allow it. A worldly site, Urban Dictionary, broadcasts itself as a reliable dictionary page in which
they define abortion in the terms of, a legal safe procedure that is there for a woman in case she,
the person in control of her own body, makes the decision to terminate a pregnancy. Don’t let
hateful, misinformed people scare you. (America Lover US, 2019) Planned parenthood is the #1
supporter/partner in abortion cases.
In Exodus 21:22-25, the Covenant Code explains a case of a pregnant women to give
insight to the importance and value of the woman herself but also the fetus being valued as
property would of high value too. The Bible gives us many verses that point to the personhood
prior to physical birth, Psalm 139:13, Jeremiah 1:4-5, and Luke 1:39-44. Psalm 139:13 is a
widely known verse in the bible that supports the life of the unborn, the Word describes God
creating humans in the womb and knowing us before we were even born or thought of.
As believers in the body of Christ, abortion should be a heavy topic to respond to as it is
such a big trend in the world in which we live in today. In response to unplanned pregnancies,
the church and the surrounding people of those who feel they have no choice but to have
2
abortions, should come together in Christ and love. By having support systems in place, you are
letting your church know that you don’t love the sin, but you love the sinner no matter what. And
the baby is never a sin. A baby is a miracle. But not just letting the church know but the church
letting you know you’re still a brother/sister in Christ.
