The body as a temple of worship of Christ
Our bodies are complex and highly organized structures made up of unique cells that work
together to accomplish specific functions necessary to sustain life. Just like a temple, God
created human in a unique way. He, (God) organized the body in different levels, starting from
the cells, then cells to form tissues and tissues to form organs. Moreover, organs are organized
into organ system such as skeletal and muscular systems. The skeletal system serves many
important functions which include, providing shape and form for the body, support, protection as
well as allowing bodily movement.
For all the body organs to perform its duties, energy must be supplied to the muscle by metabolic
system of the body. Its fascinating to see how God designed the energy system in such a way
that it conforms with our body`s energy demand.
The three energy systems work together to meet the energy demands of an activity. However,
throughout any activity, only one energy system provides the largest amount of ATP.The activity
performed by an individual will differ in reliance on the contribution from all three energy
systems depending on the intensity and duration of the effort. A supramaximal intensity effort /
explosive activity will be fueled by either the ATP-CP system or the anaerobic glycolysis system.
As the activity continues and fatigue begins to set in, these efforts may reduce in intensity
resulting in a greater contribution from the aerobic energy system. A good example to showcase
this is that when are going for a 20minute run, the first 10 seconds of the run we utilize ATP-PC
system. After ten seconds its starts to deplete and glycolysis kicks in which continues supplying
energy for approximately 2-3 minutes. At this point aerobic system picks up. Although distance
races are predominantly aerobic, all three-energy system are used. In the beginning of a race,
ATP-CP system is used to set off and run for the first couple of seconds approximately up to 10-
Seconds. After 10 seconds elapsed, Glycolysis kicks inn in energy production for the next
3minutes then after that aerobic system picks up in energy production for the entire duration of
activity. The energy systems contribute sequentially but in an overlapping fashion to the energy
demands of exercise.
According to Baker J. S. et al (2010) “The energy systems respond differently in relation to the
high, often sustained and usually diverse energy demands placed on them during daily and
sporting activities. Analysis of the current literature suggests that virtually all physical activities
derive some energy from each of the 3 energy-supplying processes. There is no doubt that each
system is best suited to providing energy for a different type of event or activity, yet this does not
imply exclusivity. Similarly, the energy systems contribute sequentially but in an overlapping
fashion to the energy demands of exercise. The anaerobic (nonmitochondrial) system can
respond immediately to the energy demands of exercise and is able to support extremely high
muscle force application and power outputs. Unfortunately the anaerobic system is limited in its
capacity, such that either a cessation of work or a reduction in power output to a level that can be
met by aerobic metabolism is seen during extended periods of intense exercise. The aerobic
energy system responds surprisingly quickly to the demands of intense exercise, yet due to a
relatively low rate of ATP turnover, is incapable of meeting the energy demands at the beginning
of exercise, irrespective of the exercise intensity, or intense exercise”.
I will use the knowledge I gained from the first 5 modules in improving my Mitochondrial
health, cellular health, muscle health, and so many other facets of my well-being. By
understanding my body type, I will work in the gym and the kitchen to optimally train and fuel
for better fitness and performance and thus thrive for a longer time. And the way I will care for
these systems through engaging in regular exercise and conditioning so that I can put these
systems to work. Repeatedly providing stimulus to these pathways will force them to adapt
positively. Lifting weights, interval training, cardiac output training, and pushing myself to
places that are physically uncomfortable that will stimulate new growth and capability in my
body. As we see in the book of 1 Corinthians 10:31, sealed it by saying “we are told
to do whatever we do to the glory of God. ... If you choose to not follow a healthy lifestyle, to
not eat in a healthy manner, to not practice self-control, to not exercise, and to
not care about your body, you are choosing to not honor God”.
The reason why we should take care of our bodies and treat like a temple is because we are
created by God the Father and that the holy spirit lives in us. Our bodies were intricately made
by the creator, our Father God. He formed our inner parts, he KNIT us together. The truth of this
words is seen in Psalms 139 “, he knit us together in our mother’s womb. Great care was taken.
He made it possible for healthy cells to multiply rapidly. Somehow, some of them became heart
cells, some became brain cells, our eyes began to form, and before we knew it… we were
whole”.
