Evan 525
Contemporary Evangelism
On Wednesday, my neighbor Joe came to me to ask whether he could use my
push mower. He was requesting this to me as his own had broken down. He had a large
lawn, and it took him approximately a couple of hours to finish using the push mower.
When he came to make the request I had just returned from a long day at the office, and
I was about to take rest. I told him that he could use my grey push mower. I had two
push mowers, but the grey one was the stronger one out of the two. Joe responded by
stating, “Thank you. I will begin cutting the grass in my lawn right now.” I told him that
I had kept the push mower in my backyard, and he could go and get one. After having
the conversation, I brought a mixed juice for me along with a sandwich from the kitchen.
After I was done with my meal, I remembered the witnessing assignment. I thought that I
would be doing a decent service by helping Joe to cut his lawn grass for free.
I heard when Joe started the lawn mower as they make a unique sound when they
start. I went out to my backyard to retrieve the second lawn mower. I figured out that if
we both cut the law grass, it would take approximately an hour. So I went to his place
and cranked the blue lawn mower. I started cutting on the opposite end of my neighbor’s
lawn. He noticed me doing this and waved at me while giving a smile. I responded by
waving and smiling back at him. I observed that he was cutting the lawn grass
horizontally, so I also started doing it from my end in the same manner. He seemed to
appreciate this as he is quite particular when it comes to cutting the lawn grass.
After an hour, we were done with the activity. He offered me money, but I refused
to take it. He said that it was fine if I did not want to accept money, but I must have a
glass of juice. I accepted to have the juice as I was tired and thirsty. During this time, we
sat down and started having a conversation. He said that he was really grateful for my
help. Even though he was feeling unwell, he had to cut the grass as it had got very long.
I asked him whether he had any specific spiritual values and beliefs. He responded by
saying, “My wife and I go to the community church on a monthly basis.” I asked him
whether he had ever been saved by the Almighty. He said he was baptized at the age of
ten.
I asked Joe whether he lived for the Lord since he had been baptized, and he
stated that “No, but I am a good human being as I do not wish the bad of other people.”
I asked him whether he had the Bible at home or not. When he said, “yes,” I
asked him to get it. After he had got the Bible I shared details on a few scriptures and
explained to him the need for God’s salvation plans. We talked about various elements
starting from Genesis to Romans. I explained how humans were born in a world of sin
due to Adam’s sin. In Romans, I showed him that every individual had committed sins in
his life and come short of the glory of God in Romans 3:23. I showed him that as per
Romans 10:3, the ultimate wage of sin is “death”. Then I shared details on John 3:16,
which reflected the Lord’s sacrificial love for mankind. Finally, I shared with John,
Romans 10:9, which shows that people need to believe in Jesus to be saved.
After having the conversation, I asked him if he understood what I was saying. He
responded by saying, ‘Yes, you mean to say that I need to be saved so that I can go to
heaven.” He paused for a moment, and I realized that he was reflecting on what he had
just said. He seemed as if he was internally facing a conflicting situation. So I started
praying in my heart so that the Holy Spirit could come to the rescue of Joe. Suddenly he
said, “It is difficult for me. I will speak to you later.” I was taken aback by his response
and waited for ten minutes, but then I left. I took the lawn mowers from outside and
returned home. f
The very next day, Joe came to me and started apologizing for leaving me
suddenly. He again thanked me as I had helped him to cut his lawn grass. He said, “I
abruptly left as I was facing some family issues which I cannot disclose to you.”I told
him it was fine and he could come and talk to me in case he wanted any kind of help. He
thanked me and left for his home.
