EVAN 101
WITNESS REPORT HELPFUL TIPS
These are not definitive rules, but are designed to give you an idea of how your instructor will be
grading your work.
What does an “A” paper look like?
•
All of the requirements in the grading rubric are met.
•
Answers are complete and specific rather than general restatements of the text or
questions.
•
The paper is easily readable and understandable. The content is presented in complete
sentences as well as complete thoughts. There are less than 5 typographical and
grammatical errors in the paper.
What does a “C” paper look like?
•
Most of the requirements in the grading rubric are met.
•
Answers still leave some questions unaddressed. For example, “I am not a Christian
because I do not believe what the Bible says.” This is not enough. What specifically do
you disagree with? Do you think the Bible is false? Why? etc.
•
The paper is somewhat readable. The content is a little disconnected. There are 6–15
typographical and grammatical errors in the paper.
What does an “F” paper look like?
•
Only a few of the requirements in the grading rubric are met.
•
Answers are nothing more than general restatements of the text and questions.
•
The paper is difficult to read because of a large number of typographical and grammatical
errors (more than 15). The thoughts do not flow together, and in some areas the thoughts
do not relate to the assignment.

of
salvation using verses from the book of Romans. It is a simple yet powerful
method of explaining why we need salvation, how God provided salvation,
EVAN 101
how we can receive salvation, and what are the results of salvation. (We
gave an example of this method in chap. 1).
1.
Romans 3:23
“For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God” (KJV).
2.
Romans 6:23
“For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through
Jesus Christ our Lord” (KJV). The punishment that we have earned for our
sins is death. Not just physical death but eternal death!
3.
Romans 5:8
“But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still
sinners, Christ died for us.”
4. Romans 10:9,13
“If you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart
that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved” (NASB).
“For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved” (HCSB).
5. Romans 5:1; 8:1; 8:38–39
“Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with
God through our Lord Jesus Christ” (NIV).
“Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ
Jesus” (NIV).
“For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor
demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height
nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from
the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord” (NIV).

Romans Seven Steps to God
2
1.1. There is a God, and we are responsible to him. (Rom 1:20; 14:12)
2.2. We have failed to fulfill our responsibility and have sinned. (Rom
3:10, 19,23)
3.3. Sin separates us from God. (Rom 6:23)
4.4. Jesus never sinned. (Rom 5:19)
5.5. Jesus died to pay for our sins. (Rom 6:23)
6.6. He rose from the dead to prove he could offer us abundant and
eternal life. (Rom 6:23)
7.7. We need to believe in Jesus in order to be saved. (Rom 10:9,13)
Ask the person to place themselves on one of the seven steps. If they say
that they are at number 7, offer them an opportunity to believe the gospel
and be saved.
God’s Accounting Book
3
Sometimes visual learners need to “see” the gospel. One way to show the
gospel is by drawing two pages of a book and explaining the gospel as you
explain the equation recorded on the pages. (We discussed this method
in chap. 8.) God’s accounting book is a way of explaining the gospel based
on Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is
eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

The ABCs of Salvation
When someone is clearly ready to give their lives to Christ, the ABCs are a
simple way to help them understand what is necessary in order for them to
cross the line of faith. (We used this method as an example in chaps.
13 and 23.)
1.
A. Admit
my need. (Luke 18:9–14)
2.
B. Believe
completely on Christ. (John 3:16)
3.
C. Call
upon him to take control of my life and save me. (Rom 10:13)
4.
D. Do
everything he asks. (Matt 7:21)
EVAN 101
The Way of the Master
4
The Way of the Master uses the Ten Commandments and a series of probing
questions as a basis to establish “lostness” and to present Christ. The
method these authors advocate for explaining the good news of salvation
uses four stepping stones. The stones are represented by the four letters
WDJD, which stand for “
W
hat
D
id
J
esus
D
o?”
W: Would you consider yourself to be a good person?
D: Do you think you have kept the Ten Commandments?
Exodus 20:3–17
1.
3
“You shall have no other gods before Me.
2.
4
“You shall not make for yourself a carved image—any likeness of
anything that is in heaven above, or that isin the earth beneath, or
that is in the water under the earth;
3.
5
you shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I,
the L
ORD
your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the
fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generations of those
who hate Me,
4.
6
but showing mercy to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My
commandments.
5.
7
“You shall not take the name of the L
ORD
your God in vain, for
the L
ORD
will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain.
6.
8
“Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.
7.
9
Six days you shall labor and do all your work,
8.
10
but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the L
ORD
your God. In it you
shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male
servant, nor your female servant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger
who iswithin your gates.
9.
11
For in six days the L
ORD
made the heavens and the earth, the sea,
and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore
the L
ORD
blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it.
10.
12
“Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be
long upon the land which the L
ORD
your God is giving you.
11.
13
“You shall not murder.
12.
14
“You shall not commit adultery.
13.
15
“You shall not steal.
EVAN 101
14.
16
“You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
15.
17
“You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not
covet your neighbor’s wife, nor his male servant, nor his female
servant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything that is your
neighbor’s.”
I normally deal first with lying, stealing, and lust because people can
more easily acknowledge them as evident sins. It seems that this is what
Jesus does in Luke 18:20.
J: On the day of judgment, if God judges you by the Ten Commandments,
will you be innocent or guilty?
D: Destiny—Will you go to heaven or hell?
More Good Approaches to Sharing One’s Faith:
Along with the evangelistic events, there are several good approaches to
sharing ones faith. Some of these are:
•
Share Jesus without Fear—(we discussed this method in chap. 31) A
simple approach that uses a series of probing questions combined
with the Bible that takes the fear out of sharing
(http://www.sharejesuswithoutfear.com).
•
FAITH—An easy approach that uses the acrostic FAITH to remember
the gospel presentation. It seeks to tie everything back through the
Sunday school (http://www.lifeway.com).
•
Got Life—An easy outline that uses the acrostic LIFE. It has a strong
apologetics application within the overall presentation
(http://www.gotlife.org).
•
Evangecube—A great visual approach to sharing one’s faith. It uses a
small cube that is rotated to reveal a snapshot of the Gospel
presentation (http://www.simplysharejesus.com).
•
God’s Special Plan—A simple and well-prepared presentation of the
Gospel for children (http://www.kidzplace.org).
