Advertisements are all around us. They can be on social media sites, magazines,
television, radio, and many more. The advertisements are made targeting a specific audience and
with a targeted message. Through keen analysis, one can perceive how the advertisements are
being used to influence the decision of the buyer to consider getting the product. The choice of
images and message is usually carefully chosen to pass on the intended message properly. By
analyzing the DKNY Be Delicious Perfume advertisement, the analysis will show how the
portrayal of Kairo has been used to appeal to the target audience, who are women.
Page 2
The target audience for the advertisement is women. The advertisement uses solid
emotional appeal. The evidence is in the central image of the model, who is a female model. Like
the characteristics that most women wish to embody, the model has excellent hair and looks fresh
and sleek. The advertisement uses sexual allusion through the model to show a sensual
environment. With the string of sexual facial expressions and body language, the model creates a
strong appeal that would make many women wish to be like her. She has confidence, good skin,
and stands out due to her facials. Therefore, it is passing a message to American women on what
is considered appealing. Moreover, the perfume is written fragrances for women showing that the
target audience is women.
Other graphics in the advertisement have emotional appeals too. The shape of the
perfume bottles resembles the green apples, and one might not even see them as they look very
similar. This image passes the message that the perfume may be as sweet and fresh as the taste of
the apples. This appeals to the target audience. Women tend to connect fruits with beauty as
society passes on the information that fruits are healthy for beauty. The fruits connect to the
perfume, implying that the scent is as delicious as the fruit. The green color makes the target
audience think of fresh apples and comfort them as fruits are associated with beautiful natural
scents. From the image, the model is living a fabulous life in New York City, as one can see on
reflection on the perfume bottles. The advertisement shows that it is a must for every woman to
have a perfect scent to maintain their reputation and good image in the big city. Based on the
lifestyle of most women in New York City, there is a need for one to show the best image of
themselves, just like anywhere else. Therefore, the ad will influence women, more of those in
New York, to feel that the best targets them and meets their needs.
Page 3
The language in the advertisement promotes the idea of beauty and a pleasant smell. Be
delicious is written in bold and is persuasive to the target audience. It offers the promise of not
just smelling lovely but also delicious. The sexual appeal of one being delicious appeals to
women as it gives them the power to be sexually desired and control how they are perceived. Of
course, the words may be subjective. The definition of women and what is delicious may vary
slightly, but there is a common understanding that being delicious is sensual and wanted. The
wording the fragrances for women” makes women, more of those in New York, know that the
scent has been made with them in mind and that it will cater to their needs. This appeals to
women as they feel that the scent has been made to make them appear as confident and sensual
as the city requires.
A close analysis of the advert shows that the chosen image and word choice have been
carefully selected to target the female audience. The use of green and apples shows the
deliciousness that one will get from the perfume. The poster shows that the perfume is targeted to
women through the writing that shows that the fragrance is for women. The advertisement
appeals to women of high society such as New York to use its scent, and with it, they will be
sensual, delicious, and beautiful through confidence.

PART 2: Questions
1. What is the significance of your essay? Why should readers care about what you
have written? (2-3 sentences)
The essay demonstrates how advertising is made to appeal to a specific population and
influence their decision in buying something. The use of the DKNY poster was necessary
because, in as much as it seems just plain harmless, it too has all the characteristics to influence
the buying choices of women.
2. Which areas of your draft do you think will benefit most from revision? (2-3
sentences)
I struggled the most with the organization. I noticed very many different aspects of the
poster at once and organized the thoughts clearly to show the meaning needed patience.
3. Consider the strengths and weaknesses of your writing. How can you capitalize
on your strengths and improve on your weaknesses in future essays? (3-4 sentences)
My strength was that I was able to articulate my thoughts and put them down in writing
quickly. I could not make the points easily, and the word flow was manageable. The challenge I
had was to tone down on my analysis to ensure that the thoughts were organized. In the future, I
will have to use a notebook to organize my thoughts to ensure that they are not all over as I have
articulated thoughts and many ideas.
