Striking a balance: ethical use of artificial intelligence.
Artificial intelligence is becoming a transformative field with technological
advancements, which raise concerns and thoughtful ethical considerations about the extent to
which people should advance in its use and development. The evolution of artificial intelligence
has resulted in complicated debates on the ethics of the matter. Some people advocate for
unrestricted progress and the use of artificial intelligence. Moreover, they might list things and
developments that have gone into its use. However, there is a middle ground that would
guarantee safe artificial intelligence use and maintain user’s ethical boundaries. How far may
people go with artificial intelligence? A balance must be reached when answering this complex
question, which involves several aspects such as human autonomy preservation, transparency
promotion, and ensuring responsible use of it.
Opponents argue that limiting the development of artificial intelligence could repress
innovation and impede global progress. For instance, opponents may highlight how artificial
intelligence has the power to revolutionize healthcare through more accurate diagnoses and
personalized treatment plans. According to the National Library of Medicine (NIH), Ahuja
mentions that artificial intelligence has made advancements such as algorithms that analyze
medical images, “such as X-rays and MRIS," to assist in the diagnosis of diseases. Improving the
efficiency and accuracy of the diagnosis and leading to better patient outcomes (Ahuja, 2019).
The possibilities of how artificial intelligence can advance in several areas are massive,
and it is important to recognize this. The diagnosis of diseases done by medical systems powered
by artificial intelligence, for example, has increased the accuracy of the results, improving
efficiency, saving lives, and reducing costs. It is essential to recognize that discussing the ethical
implications of artificial intelligence and making sure it complies with basic ethical standards
must come before identifying potential applications for the technology.
It would not be reasonable to argue that the unrestricted growth and application of
artificial intelligence will have no negative moral consequences. The impact of ethics on
artificial intelligence spans globally, attracting scrutiny from organizations including UNESCO.
The UNESCO Recommendation on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence highlights its intersection
with gender bias, ethical decision-making, and the impact on judicial systems. This perspective
from UNESCO emphasizes the need for gender-neutral AI and ethical practices as regards
deploying AI (UNESCO, n.d.). Considering these concerns expressed by UNESCO, it is
important to develop AI that is free from bias, and a gender-neutral system free from stereotypes
and discrimination.@
It is a call to action for the development of artificial intelligence systems that are fair and
ethically driven, as well as to promote honesty when it comes to making decisions in legal
processes. AI must be developed in such a way that human autonomy is respected and protected.
People should always have control over AI and decide what its use and impact should be. This
suggests that rather than eliminate or influence them, AI systems should support and enable
humans. Artificial intelligence can strike a balance between the potential gains from technology
and preserving human autonomy when it prioritizes human values. The use of AI-powered
autonomous weapons raises concerns over human control and self-rule in situations involving
conflict (Asaro, 2020). Artificial intelligence systems that make automated decisions without
meaningful human oversight undermine human autonomy. For instance, in certain jurisdictions,
sentencing or parole decisions are determined using AI algorithms. If these systems lack
transparency or accountability, people may not have the ability to challenge or understand the
decisions that affect their lives (Zavrsnik, 2020).
When it comes to the development and utilization of artificial intelligence, transparency
is a fundamental element. It is necessary to have a clear understanding of the guidelines and
regulations that govern the use of artificial intelligence to ensure ethical progress. Transparency
promotes accountability and helps find potential risks associated with artificial intelligence, such
as biased decision-making or the misuse of personal data. By establishing transparent
frameworks, we can foster public trust and engagement in the development of artificial
intelligence technologies.
The CNBC news channel reported in 2018 that a “machine-learning specialist”
uncovered that an Amazon artificial intelligence recruiting tool was showing bias against
women. Because the system was trained on ten years' worth of resumes, largely from men in the
“male-dominated” software industry, the algorithm was mistakenly programmed to favor “male
candidates’’ by omitting résumés that included "women's" or all-women educational institutions.
This incident reflects how the lack of transparency in artificial intelligence can lead to
discriminatory practices and how artificial intelligence perpetuates gender discrimination in the
hiring process, hindering the advancement of women in the industry (CNBC, 2018).
The debate over how far individuals should take artificial intelligence raises reasonable
arguments for and against its use. Some people worry about giving machines too much power
because it could lead to them controlling instead of helping. Respecting human autonomy
ensures that artificial intelligence remains a tool for empowerment. Artificial intelligence has
huge potential to make life better; the key is making sure to stay in charge.@ AI systems need to
be transparent and accountable, so users can trust them and step in if anything goes wrong.@
Always use them responsibly, thinking through the risks and benefits in different situations to
ensure that AI technology is utilized for the greater good.
Through ethical rules and good values in the use of artificial intelligence, it may be more
likely that it will enhance lives than cause problems. There is complexity, for sure, but with
careful, thoughtful work that continuously provides transparency, preserves human autonomy,
and ensures responsible use of artificial intelligence, it can expand in a good direction.
