My mother served in the Marines from 1997-2005. I, Victoria, served in the U.S Army from 2017-
2021. Our time in the military was vastly different; however, the military has implemented changes to
benefit female service members throughout the years. For example, half days for pregnant women in
2005 started at 38 weeks, and in 2018 half days began at 28 weeks. With this regulation, women can
relax more leading up to the time that they give birth.
Another example is maternity leave. In 2005, maternity leave was six weeks; In 2018, maternity
leave was twelve weeks. In 2005 the rule was that women were to start their physical fitness training
after they were cleared for duty at their six-week check-up. In 2018, a woman was not required to begin
physical fitness training until twelve weeks post-partum. Although she and her mother were required to
take their first physical fitness test six months post-partum, they changed the regulation in 2022. Now
women are no longer required to pass a pt test until one year after the day they gave birth. This
regulation is beneficial because it eliminates stress on a woman's already recovering body. There are
more rules the military has passed to be better for women.
Lastly, post-partum women today have a grace period for overnight training and deployments.
Women are no longer required to undergo any overnight training or deployment until 365 days after the
birth of their baby. These are remarkable strides the army has taken to better care for its female service
members.
