REFLECTION SUMMARY PAPER 2
The lessons learned throughout this course provided me with insight into the many issues
and trends in education. The course content covered a broad range of issues and trends from the
ineffectiveness of traditional teaching models, Disruptive Innovation Theory, Multiple
Intelligences, motivation, and engagement, how to create sustainable change in education,
integrating classroom technology, the role of today’s teacher, teacher salaries, training and
support, the transformation of education, and how to become an educational leader that creates
change. I was not aware of many of the emerging trends prior to enrolling in this course. The
course assignments challenged me to think critically about practical applications in my role as
Professor for Service-Learning courses. For example, the concept of motivation and engagement
equals personalized learning. Student motivation and engagement have historically been a
constant concern for educators. Service-Learning integrates academics with volunteering. It is a
form of experiential learning and non-traditional teaching pedagogy. Students enrolled in
Service-Learning course volunteered with non-profit community organizations. The course is
designed for student-centered personalized learning and has both in-class seminars and a
volunteer service field experience. Students have a choice in picking the organization to serve
and apply course concepts with the field experience. John Dewey has been recognized as the
father of Service-Learning. Dewey believed that “education should be purged of all residues of
