Biblical Critique: Cain and Abel
The story of Cain and Abel is one of the most well-known bible verses. Cain is the first
born and Abel the second born to Adam and Eve. Cain worked the soil and Abel cared for the
livestock. The story of these two brothers is filled with tragedy. It is significant and teaches many
lessons that include jealousy, sincerity, the importance of forgiveness, and God’s grace and
mercy. Cain becomes jealous and angry of Abel because God favored Abel’s offering and not
his. Cain’s anger caused him to murder his brother, Abel. God was displeased with Cain’s
actions and took away his ability to work the soil and thus making him a wanderer and drifter,
yet God still watched over and protected him. This paper examines the conflict of the Cain and
Abel passage and its relevance to current conflict resolution.

1. Adam and Eve were the parents of two sons. Cain and Abel. Genesis 4:1-2
