Discussion: Using the Cultural Theories Lens
Discuss how the following Guiding Questions—which are based on the
culture theories lens—help you better understand your organization. Include
in your discussion thread the strengths and weaknesses of this lens for
gaining that understanding.You do not have to share your views on each of
the guiding questions.
Cultures are weaved within the fabric of all organizations. EFSC has four brick-and-mortar
campus one on-line campus. Although “we are one college” guided by the same policies andand
procedures, each campus has its own distinct culture.
The Cocoa Campus is centrally located and largest. The culture is diverse and professional. Cocoa is
home the Bernard Simpkins Fine Arts Center, the choral and instrumental music, theatre, vocational and
technical programs, and WEFS TV.
Melbourne has a professional and friendly culture. Home to the President and upper level
administrators, Public Safety, and, Health Sciences Institutes, Small Business Development Center, and
EFSC's on-campus Student Housing Facility.
Palm Bay Campus is a small campus, the fastest growing and most culturally diverse and a professional
family-oriented culture. Home to the Center for Cybersecurity and Digitial Forensics, Fire Training
Academy, vocational and health science programs.
Titusville Campus is also a small campus. Titusville offers a personalized college experience and a
friendly atmosphere for learning. Home to career/vocational program classes, including Office
Technology and Transportation and Logistics.
When it comes to strengths, EFSC is committed to excellence and provides affordable quality
educational options to our diverse community. Given the esoteric organizational culture, there
is no consensus when it comes to the mission, vison, tasks, and goals. Although Full-time
Faculty have some influence, decisions are made by the Executive Council and staff have little
to no voice.
I have two roles; I serve as Director for Service-Learning and Civic Engagement (CSLCE) and Adjunct
Instructor. My role is quite different from my job description. For example, I am responsible for
directing and administering CSLCE however, I am not always operations and activities of the
included in decisions that impact the CSLCE such as scheduling, enrollment and partnerships with certain
organizations that engage in to civic engagement activities.
The view from my Cultural Lens confirms the esoteric culture. For example, new organizational
changes and centralizing departments. For example, new positions were created, folks were
appointed, faculty was informed of the new structure however, staff was not informed for
months later. I see this as a weakness as the vision had not been articulated.
