COMPLETING OBSERVATION CYCLE FOR A TEACHER ASSIGNMENT
INSTRUCTIONS
For this assignment, you will complete a formal observation cycle. This will include conducting
a mock pre-observation conference, a mock post-observation conference, and completing an
observation form while you are observing your selected video. You will select one of the three
teacher-observation videos located in the Learn items for Module 8: Week 8:
Watch: Adam Maitland’s Classroom Observation (elementary)
Watch: Science Lesson Study – Investigation-Colloquium Method
Watch: John Huber – Classroom Observation (high school)
As you watch the video you have selected, you will complete your preferred Observation Form
among the ones you submitted for the Finding and Evaluating Observations Protocols
Assignment. For the written portions of this assignment, please use a fictitious teacher
name.
You will need to discuss the implications of the data noting 3-4 commendations and 3-4
specific recommendations, including any needed instructional improvements and
professional development. Based on this information, you will establish the focus for the
next observation.
This assignment must be written in current APA format which includes a title page and an APA-
compliant reference page.
It will be acceptable for you to submit the Observation Form as a separate document to Canvas,
if necessary.

You may do it as a dialogue or you may discuss the conversation as a narrative as long as you ask the
questions that need to be asked.
Your post conference needs to be a script of your conversation as you provide feedback.
Pre-Observation Conference
During this mock conference you will establish the focus of your observation. You will write
about how you would conduct this conference, including the questions you would ask and what
information you would expect to learn from the teacher to prepare you for the observation.
OBSERVATION CYCLE
Please script your expected dialogue with the teacher as you ask questions and as they respond.
You will also want to know that the teacher is prepared for the observation by making sure they
know what to expect.

misconceptions for this lesson.
How do you plan to facilitate student ownership in the learning process?
Which teaching and learning strategies will be utilized in your lesson and how do you determine
which strategies you will incorporate?
1b. Describe your thorough understanding of active learning strategies and tools you plan to use
for this lesson.
How do you gain knowledge of accessibility and ensure accessibility in your lesson?
What is your process for planning for a variety of students' backgrounds, specifically their
cultures, skills, language proficiency, interests, and special needs, to gain knowledge for
instructional purposes?
1c. What are the standards, objectives, and measurable instructional outcomes associated with
this lesson and how do you plan to incorporate them within the lesson?
What student learning tasks in your plans address incorporating rigor and opportunities for
student(s) to demonstrate expected learning outcomes?
1d. After teaching your lesson, please provide an in-depth review of how the instructional
outcomes compare to the actual observed student learning outcomes.
Explain any discrepancies that may have been observed and share your action steps for an
improvement in student learning based on your personal reflection and your professional
learning goals.

Observation
During the observation, you will watch the video you selected and will mark your observation
form to collect the data needed to evaluate the instruction provided. This observation form is one
of the forms you found in your Finding and Evaluating Observations Protocols Assignment.
Please select a standards-based form and not just a checklist. This completed form must be
submitted as a part of your assignment.

Post-Observation Conference
For this mock conference, you will include an analysis and an interpretation of the data you
collected during the observation. You will then discuss your observation and your analysis of the
data with the teacher and write a script of the conversation you would have with the teacher. This
will include the questions you will ask, their anticipated responses, and then your
recommendations.
