Technology Education: Self-Assessment Introduction
Using an online free self-assessment tool pointed out, that areas of growth in technology
including learning-based games, learning management systems, and teaching using technology in
the classroom. Using Edutopia, three articles were found to address these spheres of tech used in
the classroom.
Article 1: Learning-Based Games

Sanderell, Heather. Teaching with digital games in elementary school. (2024). Edutopia.
https://www.edutopia.org/article/game-based-learning-ideas-elementary-students
Reason for Choosing Article
Based on the self-assessment, I would like to learn more about the learning games available in
the classroom. This article mentioned Kahoot, Blooklet, and Quizizz. Based on this information,
it seemed like a good opportunity to learn more about the subject.
Concept Learned
This article highlights the positive effects game-based learning has in the elementary classroom
(Sanderell, 2024). Not only do the games provide a fun way for students to practice their skills,
but teachers can also collect data on individual students and whole class information. Sanderell
(2024) highlighted this ability using Kahoot, Quizizz, and Blooket.
How I Can Apply It
As a Title 1 teacher, using game-based learning in my current classroom is challenging. This is
primarily due to time, a lack of Chromebooks in my classroom, and shared space. My goal as I
move into intervention is to research the best game-based platforms to use as guided practice and

review. These apps immediately provide feedback to both the student and the teacher to help
guide the learning process.
Article 2: How to Avoid Being Overwhelmed by Technology Options
References:
Poth, Rachelle, Dene. How to avoid being overwhelmed by technology options. (2022). Edutopia.
https://www.edutopia.org/article/how-to-avoid-being-overwhelmed-by-technology-
options
Reason for Choosing Article
This article discusses digital learning platforms. Much of my current job in Title 1 tracks data
using Excel, and the school I work with also uses Google Classroom in the classroom. I am not
uncomfortable with either platform, but I want to learn more about each and expand my horizons
in other areas. There are, however, so many things available that it can become difficult to
choose.
Concept Learned
This article encourages using Canvas, Google Classroom, Microsoft Teams, or Schoology (Poth,
2022). Rather than having many accounts with a variety of passwords and codes, students have
all the information in one spot. The article expanded on each platform's capabilities by
describing other useful tools for both the student and the teacher.
How I Can Apply It
Our district uses Google Classroom. Because I am not a classroom teacher, I do not use it.
Therefore, I have not spent time accessing all that is available to the students and myself.
According to the article, Nearpod and Quizizz can be shared interactively on this platform.
Exploring these options would help review and reinforce concepts with my students.

Article 3: Adapting Reading Comprehension Instruction to Virtual Learning
References:
Ferguson, Catharine. Adapting Reading Comprehension Instruction to Virtual Learning. (2020).
Edutopia https://www.edutopia.org/article/adapting-reading-comprehension-instruction-
virtual-learning
Reason for Choosing Article
This article is applicable in my classroom, primarily with my older students. I wanted to see what
resources it promoted to help with reading comprehension. With a glance, it looked helpful for
comprehension and vocabulary.
Concept Learned
After reading the article, Ferguson (2020) suggested several vocabulary platforms that would
assist in understanding the text. Other polling features and forms were discussed as helpful in
gathering knowledge. It was also mentioned that strategies could be modeled through different
digital tools.
How I Can Apply It
I lead reading groups in the 3rd through 5th grade. It was mentioned that text could be adapted
according to the student’s reading levels (Ferguson, 2020). This would be useful for my lower
reading groups to make the text more accessible. I would also use a digital whiteboard as
mentioned in the article. It would be helpful for word walls, concept sorts, vocabulary, and
morphology. It would also be fun to use polling features and forms.
