What are the objectives of this lesson? Social Studies
The objective is to map out the different routes of the underground railroad.
With teacher instruction, students will use an interactive map to see which routes were taken in the underground railroad. They will then create
their own maps using the shortest route.
Why did you choose these objectives? (Rationale and indicate standard numbers and text).
This topic is important for children to learn about a significant part of history. It is important to teach the students how people work together on
an issue of mutual concern. The Underground Railroad provided escape from the south.
What content do you plan to cover and what activities do you plan to use?
I plan to have the students view the interactive map of the underground railroad and create their own map using shortest route north.

I chose this particular activity so the students can understand the plight of the slaves in their escape.

The objective is to see what different forms of communication the slaves used.
With teacher instruction, students will design their own quilts to help free the slaves. Students will also work on a lesson where they create their
own messages using “code words.”

This topic is important for children to learn about how dangerous the escape was for the slaves. It is important to teach the students how code
words, songs and quilts were used to help everyone escape in a safe way.

The students will create their own quilts as well as their own messages using “code words.”

I chose this particular activity so the students can understand the complex communication system that was used.

I chose this particular activity so the students can understand the importance of having faith in God and the courage to lead.
