Watching the video on Tyler and working with a child at church who has a similar
situation I can see where it would be difficult to behave when nobody around you understands.
Personally, if I could not express that I was hungry I would become very grumpy and start to
misbehave because it feels as if nobody around me is helping. When children are not able to
communicate normally it becomes difficult for them. It may seem that the person they are
communicating with does not care. Having to repeat yourself for what you need would become a
frustration. It would be very easy to give up, get annoyed, and show out in order to gain attention
in another way. This is a question that I have never really thought about and I think it applies to
all students; special needs or not. If student’s basic needs are not being met of course they are
going to misbehave. This concept points to Maslow’s hierarchy of needs; the first thing that is
needs are the psychological needs in order to reach your potential.
One of the main supports that was put in place for Tyler was the PECS system. Within the
video the teacher explained that the first year he was nonverbal and now he is becoming more
verbal. I think that PECS is a wonderful tool in order for Tyler to communicate and it teaches the
connection between the word and the actual object. Another support that was used was the
calendar time in the morning that allowed for the students to greet everyone and work on
relationship building. The teacher said that Tyler would play by himself and not associate with
anyone else. During the video it seemed very clear that Tyler was comfortable with peers and had
built relationships with them. A third support that was used with Tyler is concise directions; no
more than one or two words in the step. Clear directions allow Tyler to be able to learn better
because he can focus on one thing at a time. It is important that directions and instruction not be
cluttered or confusing because then the child will act out or lose attention. Giving clear and
concise directions is going to benefit any child because they can focus on the task at hand.

Ephesians 4:2 says, “Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one
another in love” (New International Version). As Tyler’s teacher I know that the most important
part of my job would be to love him unconditionally and be patient beyond measure. This verse
hits everything a special education encompasses. Everything that you would do with Tyler would
require patience. A simple activity may not be simple for him, it is going to require patience to
repeat directions and lessons over and over again. There is patience in knowing what Tyler
needs. Along with patience is gentleness; to be his teacher would require a gentle soul. The
teacher has to be gentle in actions, thought, and words to the student. Frustration from the
teacher will probably occur, but it has to be withheld from the child because it is not in their
control. Christ is the perfect example of this teacher. We continually mess up and do not always
know how to ask for what we need. Christ is nothing but humble and patient with us over and
over again. This is the perfect picture of what Tyler’s teacher should exemplify.
