Introduction
Learning takes on many forms which all depend on the learner. “Learning is usually
defined as a change in an individual caused by experience” (Slavin, 2015, pp. 100). Discovering
how children grow, adapt, and develop within their environment promotes different learning
styles. As Christian educators, we are must engage in the love of teaching to make a difference in
our student's lives. Teaching promotes learning through experience and a humble dependence on
God. As teachers, it is our responsibility to promote that learning in the classroom. An effective
teacher will understand the different learning theories and styles and be able to teach
accordingly. Also, as Christian educator’s, our passion for teaching should demonstrate the love
of Christ as stated in 1st Cor. 16:14 (New International Version), "Do everything in love".
Learning Theory and Its Importance
There are many different learning theories when it comes to how children develop
throughout their lives. When looking at the different theories of how children develop, there are
two learning theories that come to mind, Piaget’s cognitive theory and Bandura’s social learning
theory. Both social learning theory and cognitive theory involve stages which can be followed
but, these stages are different. These theories both highlight the importance of observation as a
way of learning. The social learning theory and the cognitive theory both believe that the
environment of the child greatly affects the performance of the child. Theses theories allow for
teachers to mold their teaching styles on what they believe is most productive and beneficial for
