Topic: Analysis of Jesus’ Example of Teaching and Learning

The discussion of the subject: “Topic Analysis of Jesus’ Example of Teaching and
Learning” (Conner, Fred 2018) should be predicated by the definitions of teaching and learning.
A paraphrase of the definition of teaching as found on the Merriam-Webster dictionary website is
“to cause to know something, to accustom to some action or attitude, to impart knowledge of or
to instruct by precept, example or experience.” (www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/teach)
Our text book defines learning as “an enduring change in behavior, or in the capacity to behave
in a given fashion, which results from practice or other forms of experience”. (Robert, S., &
Schunk, D. 2018)
While teaching Jesus often encouraged people to think using parables, stories and other
teachable moments. In these examples he expressed biblical truths using language that the
disciples and other listeners could relate to because it was presented on a level appropriate to
their ability to understand. He used the traditions of the people as well as their home and
working environments to build a word picture that allowed many of his students to grasp a
concept immediately while others gained understanding after thought or reflection.
Jesus would often assess the level of understanding of his students using questions or by
listening to what the students were discussing after he taught them something. Table 1.3 in our
text details some methods of assessing learning. (Robert, S., & Schunk, D. 2018) Just as Jesus

used these methods, we too can understand our students level of understanding so we can know
if the concept needs further instruction or review.
There are so many biblical principles demonstrated by Jesus’ teaching example that we
can emulate. One of the finest to me is that of long suffering or patience. As we teach and learn,
the use of patience will be required and often will be needed by both the instructor and the
student. I often find myself having to read over and over the same passages in the Bible before I
find the knowledge nugget that others may see the first time they read it. I know that I have also
tested the patience of instructors in the past with questions requiring them to go over parts of a
lesson so that I can fully understand learning objective. As an instructor of Marines, I have had
to reteach entire lessons because I wasn’t satisfied with the answers I would get from the
students during the lesson summary. While this could try my patience at times I knew it was
necessary as the result of the Marines not understanding the concepts could be deadly for them
and their comrades.
