Given a real-life scenario, the student will use addition and
subtraction to estimate problems about their shopping trip with
13/15 problems correct.

a) estimate and determine the sum or difference of two whole
numbers.
b) create and solve single-step and multistep practical problems
involving sums or differences of two whole numbers, each 9,999
or less.

Development of your Formative
Assessment Questions
The question format allows the students to type the answer. The
Kahoot avoids using test-bias questions because they are just
simple addition and subtraction questions using estimation. I
developed the questions by choosing simple addition and
subtraction questions that require the students to estimate to the
nearest tenth. By using these simple questions, I will have a better
idea of understanding and evaluating which section of the problem
that the student is struggling with which allows me to provide
more proper feedback. To review and prepare the students for the
assessment, I will conduct a time of classroom instruction where
we review the rules for estimation. During this time students will
be encouraged to ask questions and discuss areas they are unsure
of.

Directions for Students 1. For this assignment, you will use mental math. To begin,
please grab your classroom iPad and open the app Kahoot.
2. Please give me a thumbs up when you have completed step
one. Once everyone has given a thumbs up, I will give you
a code to join the Kahoot and I will write it on the board.
3. To complete the Kahoot, you will be using addition and
subtraction problems to estimate the answers. The numbers

in the problems must be estimated to the nearest tenth and
then solved.
4. Once you have completed your Kahoot, please submit it
and put your iPad back in your cubbies.
Data Collection I will review the answers the students have submitted on the
Kahoot that are incorrect. I will use the data from Kahoot to see if
students reached the learning objective goal and will plan for
further tailored instruction.

addition and subtraction using
estimation activity on Kahoot.
John has displayed strength in
understanding addition and
subtraction, but he is lacking
some understanding of
estimation. I think with a
stronger understanding and
practice that John can complete
these types of problems with no

Remediation Strategy for a
Struggling Student
To provide remediation for the struggling student, we will do a
repeated review of the Kahoot. We will work back through the

problems one at a time and discuss the reasons they were wrong
the first time and how to correct them. Then, I will provide the
student with a new estimation activity sheet to work and practice
on. By going back and completing a repeated review, students
grasp concepts and understand problems they may have not
understood in the first place (Karakonstantaki, 2018).
Remediation Strategy for the
Whole Class
To provide a remediation strategy for the whole class, I will
incorporate peer guidance. Peer assisted learning has been known
to be on of the best intervention programs for children struggling
in curriculum comprehension (Bugaj, 2019). Allowing the students
to work together and help one another teaches them teamwork and
improves their skills.
Reflection From Your Student
Date and Time:
My practice student scored [14] out of [15] on the assessment.
This assessment took my student 8 minutes to complete.
Student feedback: The student liked the opportunity to choose
own answer rather than having to solve and type it out. The student
liked having the opportunity to complete the activity using
technology. One recommendation they gave was to move the
question into the image box rather than the question box since it
consists of math problems.
Self-Reflection Part 1 One area I would like to improve is finding a greater variety of
technological tools when planning the instruction. I would like to
learn more about different tools and their benefits of being used in
the classroom and the impacts they have on students.
Self-Reflection Part 2 My research was most beneficial when choosing the remediation
strategies to use for a single student and the whole class. Without
the research, I would have no idea of what kind of strategies to
attempt and how to use them. Researching strategies to aid in
student learning growth is necessary for creating a strong
classroom community that prepares students (Brookhart, 2018).
