Journal Writing Prompt
Grade Level Kindergarten
Virginia SOL K.12 The student will write to communicate ideas for a variety of
purposes.

words to describe pictures or write about experiences.
National Standard Standard 12: Students use spoken, written, and visual language to
accomplish their own purposes (e.g., for learning, enjoyment,

What do you like best about our classroom?
Students will write 1-2 sentences explaining what they like about their
classroom. Then, the students will draw pictures of what they like best
and share with the class.

Tell the story of your family’s history.
Students will collect and organize information about their family history
to create a short report.
The student will write 2 paragraphs (each paragraph must include 5
sentences).
Once the students have made the correct revisions, they will get the
opportunity to share it with the class to learn about the cultural
differences among one another.

Students will conduct 3 sentences writing their letters and forming the
sentences correctly.
Students will brainstorm their favorite animal and explain why they
would be that animal and why.
The student will turn in their paper for assistance and make the
necessary revisions once given feedback.
Narrative Writing Prompt

Virginia SOL 6.7 The student will write narration, description, exposition, and
persuasion.
i) Revise sentences for clarity of content including specific vocabulary
and information.
National Standard Standard 5: Students employ a wide range of strategies as they write and
use different writing process elements appropriately to communicate
with different audiences for a variety of purposes.

Write about the accomplishment you are most proud of.
Students will write a short narrative explaining the accomplishment they
are the proudest of.
Students will use a dictionary to find synonyms of common words to
compile a well-constructed and clear story.
Once students have finished, they will trade with another student in the
class and the students will use a red pencil to make the necessary
corrections.

First students will pick their favorite place to go.
Next, students will brainstorm and write a list of words that describe the
place they are talking about.
Then, students will compile 5 descriptive sentences about their favorite
place.
Lastly, the students will draw a picture of their favorite place and label
all the descriptive aspects of their picture.
Persuasive Writing Prompt

Virginia SOL 5.7 The student will write for a variety of purposes: to describe, to
inform, to entertain, to explain, and to persuade.
b) Use a variety of prewriting strategies
National Standard Standard 7: Students conduct research on issues and interests by
generating ideas and questions, and by posing problems. They gather,
evaluate, and synthesize data from a variety of sources (e.g., print and
non-print texts, artifacts, people) to communicate their discoveries in
ways that suit their purpose and audience.

Should schools require a dress code?
The students will compile a diagram with the pros and cons of a dress
code. They will write a minimum of 200 words of why I should agree
with them on having a school dress code or not having a school dress
code.
The students will use prewriting strategies (Listing, asking questions,
clustering etc.) to write an educational paper with information rather
than opinion.
They will need to research this topic and communicate what they have
discovered.

Then I will divide the class into two groups. Those who are for school
dress code and those against it.

Students will be required to write a poem based off their favorite color.
To help, students will brainstorm a list of things that are their favorite
color. Students will be required to write a poem that is at least 10 lines
long and it must rhyme.
