Resources and Materials: All materials must be brought with you form America.
United States map, family picture, picture of my adopted siblings, Texas flag, Ethiopian flag and Chinese flag
Standards:
State: VA SOL 1.2.c.
Objective:
Through a worksheet, students will draw a line matching the correct country to the right flag, matching 3/3
correctly.
INSTRUCTION
Direct Instruction/Modeling:
1. I will show the students the Texas flag.
2. I will then sing the first verse of ‘Deep in the Heart of Texas’
3. I will explain the weather of Texas, then show some pictures of major land marks i.e. the
Sam Houston statue, the Alamo and a waterpark.
4. Then I will show the students a picture of my family. I will explain where my adopted siblings
are from.
5. I will then show the flags from China and Ethiopia
6. I will a short story of how I got to go to Ethiopia when I was 12 and pick up my little sister.
7. I will tell them how flags sometimes represent countries, but in my case one flag does not represent all
of us. My family has come up with other things to represent us.
Guided Practice: Students will color their own flag using different colors and put a symbol on their flag.
Underneath the flag, the students will explain what their symbol within their flag stands for.
Independent Practice: Students will be given a worksheet with the three flags on it and the names of the
countries underneath. They will draw lines connecting the correct flag to the right country.
Closure: I will teach the students the song, ‘Deep in the heart of Texas’.
