Stress can come up in many forms and in different scenarios within our day to day lives.
As teachers, stress can be caused by many factors within their personal lives and within the lives
of coworkers and students. According to the article “The ABCs of Managing Teacher Stress”,
teacher-related stress can be related to poor relationships, inadequate resources, a heavy
workload, and poor student behavior (Nagel, 2003). Recently, within the last 10 years, there has
been an increased demand in teachers due to the high stress within the job and the many
expectations that are placed on them. Although teaching is a very rewarding job, it is definitely a
calling to those that have patient hearts for the younger generation and the minds and well-being
of young people. As stated in Proverbs 22:6, “Train up a child in the way he should go; even
when he is old he will not depart from it.”, children are in need of guidance and care for their
wellbeing. This verse can be found as a piece of encouragement for teachers who are losing hope
or vision as to why they are doing what they are doing. Students need consistent encouragers in
their day to day as a way of positive feedback and even setting boundaries for how they are
spending their time.
The ABC’s of managing stress as teachers are implications as how to handle stress well
or healthily manage stress as a teacher. The A stands for “Acknowledge”, B stands for “Behavior
Modification” and C stands for “Communication”. The first step that teachers can take in
managing their stress levels is to simply acknowledge what is the root of their stress and
who/what is causing it. For example, if there is a situation where a teacher has experienced stress
due to a student who is consistently interrupting and misbehaving during instruction time, there
can be ways to promote behavior change or interventions that help with said students’ behavior
and attitude towards school. The teacher could implement a new behavior modification plan for
the student or even begin to provide the student with busy work or small tasks to complete while
