Vocabulary development, reading comprehension, and reading-writing connection are all
related in many different ways. They all create the reading experience. These three things
develop skills to become successful readers. If word meaning are taught well enough, students
will find reading material easier to comprehend[JoA15]. There are many things teachers can do
to ensure that students develop all three and build their understanding of all three.
As a teacher, to ensure my students get all three, is to begin with a read-aloud. Reading
out loud can build reading comprehension. I would begin by going over a few vocabulary words
for the students to listen for during the story. Throughout the story I would check for
comprehension by asking questions. When finished reading the story and checking for
comprehension I would have the students write a summary of the story using those vocabulary
