Discussion Board 1- Due August 27th
Meditate on Proverbs 27:17, which states, “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another”
(NIV). This Scripture clearly teaches that the Word of God is a “double-edged sword” (Hebrews 4:12),
and that we are to sharpen one another through our interactions. Using this Scripture as your
background, post a thread related to the biblical importance of collaboration with others, making sure to
consider the uniqueness of your professional setting. Use the assigned textbook readings, the Bible
readings, and the presentations to connect scriptural teaching to your studies. Your thread must
demonstrate evidence of a scholarly approach and thoughtful analysis.

Discussion Board 2- Due September 3, 2020
In the presentation this week Autism Everyday, several families share their challenges with having a
child with autism. As you reflect on the topics of this week and what you have learned so far throughout
this course, consider how collaboration and community supports would benefit these families.
Answer the following questions in your thread: What types of community support(s) would you
recommend to one of these families (consider therapy services, home support, community support,
transportation services, etc.). Research and share one service provider within your state or community
that offers the support your recommended. Why did you choose this support and service? Include a
Bible verse or link to another video to support your statement.

Discussion Board 3- Due September 10, 2020
As you continue to learn about collaboration, there are many challenges in learning how to effectively
build collaboration with other people. In the presentation this week Cultivating Collaboration: Don't Be
So Defensive!, Jim Tamm discusses that the single greatest inhibitor of collaboration is our own
defenses.
Answer the following questions in your thread: Discuss a situation that you personally faced where your
own defenses impacted the outcome of a collaborative effort. Do you agree that it was personal fears
that were the foundation of your defenses? From viewing this presentation and course readings, what
strategies have you learned to be non-defensive and how could you behave differently for a different
outcome? Feel free to include a Bible verse or link to another video to support your statement.

I have often had to work in groups, whether being for a school project or sometimes
even a job interview. There was one instance in which I attended a job interview that
was expected to last the whole day, and as this would be a job that would involve
working with a team; there were of course a number of team building exercises and
games that were thrown into the day. Unfortunately for me; my ex had turned up for the
same interview meaning that we were going to be forced to work together. Our
relationship had ended very badly, to the point in which we had mutually decided that
we were much better off not interacting with each other for a while- therefore this was a
less than ideal situation. There was indeed a lot of emotion involved, from both our
ends, and this made concentrating (and indeed, collaborating) extremely difficult.
However, I have always been of the opinion that one should leave their personal life out
of said situations and therefore I did my best not to allow myself to get bothered. What’s
more, I was making a point to stop myself from feeling hatred towards my ex, for as the
Bible advises; “Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in
Christ forgave you.” (Ephesians 4:32). Of course this is much easier said than done.
And regretfully, I must confess that my instincts were telling me not to interact and
therefore I most definitely did not perform as well in the team building exercises as I
could have. This not to say that I was rude or that I didn’t try my absolute best, but the
personal feelings and fears that erupted within me during this attempted collaborative
effort most certainly affected my performance during the interview and during the team
building exercises. In the end, I didn’t get the job.
Upon reflection, what I should have done is taken a moment to myself and allowed
myself to breathe and remain calm, focusing on what was important in that moment
rather than allowing my personal feelings to affect what was going on. As stated
previously, I’ve always believed that one’s own personal baggage should be left outside
during such group works- I should have remembered this and numbed my defences to
be dealt with when I got home. Sometimes of course, such tactics are beyond our
control and I truly hope I never have to go through a similar situation again, however if I
must; I will remember the importance of setting one’s own differences aside for the
purpose of collaboration.

Why were anti-literacy laws passed in the South?- Chapter 11, Question 4
In many states in the South before, during and after the Civil War remained pro-slavery
and anti-equality for minorities such as African-Americans whom they viewed as
monumentally inferior as well as less-than humans. The implementation of anti-literacy
laws were motivated through the fear that black literacy “would prove a threat to the
slave system -- which relied on slaves' dependence on masters”. (The Slave
Experience- Education, Art & Culture) By keeping the slaves ignorant in this regard, this
reinforced the white population's self-view of superiority whilst at the same time
enforcing the subjugation of slaves by denying them the education they would require to
rise above slavery. Therefore, slaves learning to read and write was exclusively
forbidden and teaching them to do so was considered a serious criminal offence. In fact,
“The Alabama Slave Code of 1833 included the following law “[S31] Any person who
shall attempt to teach any free person of color, or slave, to spell, read or write, shall
upon conviction thereof by indictment, be fined in a sum of not less than two hundred
fifty dollars, nor more than five hundred dollars.”” (Smithsonian American Art Museum).
Interestingly, prior to 1831, there were actually few states that had reservation against
the teaching of Slaves to read, however there was a particular instant in August of that
year that resulted in all of the Southern states, minus Maryland, Kentucky and
Tennessee, imposing this extreme ban. This event was known as The Southampton
Insurrection (or Nat Turner’s Rebellion). Nat Turner was an enslaved man, and “he and
six others killed the Travis family, managed to secure arms and horses, and enlisted
about 75 other enslaved people in a disorganized insurrection that resulted in the
murder of an estimated 55 white people.” (History.com). Naturally, the rebellion was a
failure with all those involved being killed and extreme restrictions upon slave rights
being implemented as a result, including the anti-literacy laws that ensured that slaves
would remain illiterate.
