how they are different from here in
other parts of the world..
Subject Grade
: Science : 4
th
State Standard: The student will investigate and understand the differences of the four
seasons and how they can vary in other parts of the world.
National Standard: As a result of their activities in grades K-4, all students should develop an
understanding of the four seasons and how the seasons are different in other parts of the world.
Primary Objective: The student will correctly answer 12 of 15 questions regarding the
relationships ofthe Earth, sun, and moon.
Classroom Diversity and Differentiated Instruction: This class of 19 students is comprised
of a diverse group of individuals including heritages of Caucasian (9), African American (5),
Hispanic (3), and Asian (2) descent. There is also a range of disabilities represented in the
classroom including one student with a mild hearing impairment, three English Language
Learners (ELLs), and two students withhigh-functioning autism. There are also several
different learning styles among the students such as kinesthetic, visual, and auditory. The
student with the hearing impairment sits closest to the front of the class.

Seasons Tree Change worksheet
Seasons and Weather worksheet
Technology Integration: Have students look up the scientific basis of seasons. If they have a
hard time identifying the seasons have them do so by describing the type of clothing they
would wear durning the different times of the year. Have them fill out the seasons tree
worksheet as they look up the information on the computer. Giving them about 15 mintues to
do so.
Character Principle: Each seasonnot only effects every person’s mood and the ther line of
thinking, but the seasons also come with different celebrations and things to do in each season.
The people says that everything has it’s season and that is something that can be discussed in
this lesson. (Ecclesiastes 3:1)
LESSON PRESENTATION [during the lesson]
EDSP 360
Set: Students will be able to identify the four seasons and describe different events that happen
in each.
Introduction (5 minutes)
Raise a discussion on the different seasons. Potential questions include: "What are the four
seasons? What activities do we do in each season? What holidays are there? What experience
do you have during a particular season?"
Explain that the seasons are a reflection of how solar energy is distributed to the Earth based
on its axis of rotation as well as its shape.
Tell your students that it is important to have seasons as a way of letting life be possible on
Earth.
Explicit Instruction/Teacher modeling (5 minutes)
Ask your students to identify the four seasons again.
Explain that in different parts of the world, people experience different weather in the same
season. Ask your students if they like warm, cool, or rainy weather.
Ask your students to describe the weather for each season in your area.
Guided Practice (15 minutes)
On the board, write the different types of weather that your students experience in each season.
Pair your students up.
On paper, have your students draw pictures of the seasons and make a small collage showing
each of the four different seasons. If the seasons are very similar in your area, distinguish the
seasons by discussing holidays and celebrations in each season.
Independent working time (20 minutes)
Tell your students to think about events that happen during certain seasons. For example, in
the summer is they have summer break, and the winter they have winter break.
Ask students to recount aloud some of their experiences during certain seasons. Ask them to
share which experience was effected by the season. For examples, students would not
swimming at the beach with their family in the winter.
Direct your students to create individual posters of a special event or experience that happens
during their favorite seasons. For example, if a student really enjoys celebrating Thanksgiving,
instruct her to draw a picture representing Thanksgiving and the weather during Fall.
Differentiation
Enrichment: Have your students look up the scientific basis of seasons. Give your students
the Seasons Tree Change worksheet to complete.
Support: If your students have trouble identifying the seasons, ask them to describe the
different seasons based on the clothing they wear. Give your students the Seasons and Weather
worksheet to complete.
EDSP 360
Assessment (15 minutes)
Go around the classroom, and have students discuss the celebration/event and season they
drew. Ask students to discuss how the drawings clarify their ideas, thoughts, or feelings about
their experience. As the students present, discuss the importance of seasons and how each one
has different events to celebrate.
Review and closing (5 minutes)
Ask your students to identify the four seasons again.
Ask for volunteers to explain why seasons change and how they affect people's moods,
attitudes, or experiences.
