Struggling Readers Case Study
Nathan is a 9.5-year-old fourth grader who is active and enjoys school, excelling in
science and social studies. Despite this, he is having difficulty in his reading class, struggling to
decode unfamiliar words and some sight words. His reading speed is approximately 55 words per
minute, and his positive attitude is waning due to the challenge. Nathan's reading strengths
include accurately and quickly reading sight words through the 1st-grade level, accurately and
quickly decoding one-syllable words, and being an active participant during class. Three goals
have been set to help Nathan become a better reader, with strategies and activities to reach them.
Goals
Goal 1: Increase Nathan’s accuracy and rate of fluency to 75 words per minute
The repeated reading strategy is a great way to increase fluency and comprehension.
