STUDENT ASSETS (KNOWLEDGE OF STUDENTS)
Complete this section if you are in a practicum setting. If you are not in a practicum setting,
please list N/A.
Personal (Interests, family
backgrounds, experiences,
etc.)
This class contains both females and males. Some
students live in two-person household, but most
students live in a single parent household, or with their
grandparents. A small portion of the class lives with
foster parents.
Cultural (Traditions, dialects,
worldview, literature, arts,
etc.)
Class is primarily English speaking, but there are 3
Spanish speaking students in the class. There are 10
females and 9 males in the class.
Community (Landmarks,
community events, etc.)
The school is in a very small rural town in southwest
Virginia in the Appalachian Mountains. Most parents
work in the towns local plant that makes furniture.
Developmental (Cognitive,
physical, social, and
emotional)
The students are cooperative and share often. There is
one student who does not like to speak in front of the class
and does well with presenting his ideas to a small group
instead.
CONTENT STANDARDS
State Standards 6.2The student will investigate and understand that the solar
system is organized and the various bodies in the solar system
interact. Key ideas include
b) planets have different sizes and orbit at different distances
from the sun;
National Standards Develop and use a model of the Earth-sun-moon system to
describe the cyclic patterns of lunar phases, eclipses of the
sun and moon, and seasons. MS-ESS1-1
ESS1.B: Earth and the Solar System
This model of the solar system can explain eclipses of the
sun and the moon. Earth’s spin axis is fixed in direction over
the short-term but tilted relative to its orbit around the sun.
EDLC 623
The seasons are a result of that tilt and are caused by the
differential intensity of sunlight on different areas of Earth
across the year. (MS-ESS1-1)
InTASC Standards Standard #3: Learning Environments. The teacher works
with others to create environments that support
individual and collaborative learning, and that encourage
positive social interaction, active engagement in
learning, and self motivation.
Standard #4: Content Knowledge. The teacher understands
the central concepts, tools of inquiry, and
structures of the discipline(s) he or she teaches and creates
learning experiences that make the discipline
accessible and meaningful for learners to assure mastery of
the content.
Standard #5: Application of Content. The teacher
understands how to connect concepts and use differing
perspectives to engage learners in critical thinking, creativity,
and collaborative problem solving related to
authentic local and global issues.
Standard #6: Assessment. The teacher understands and
uses multiple methods of assessment to engage learners
in their own growth, to monitor learner progress, and to guide
the teacher’s and learner’s decision making.
LEARNING OBJECTIVE(S)
These must be behavioral and measurable.
Statements of what students will know, understand, and be able to do at the end of the lesson
(consider all three domains). Include condition, performance, and criterion.
The main idea and central focus of this lesson will be to make sure that students
understand and recognize the properties of different planets and be able to name the
planets in order of distance from the sun. This will lead into gravity and how the planets
orbit the sun.
BEGINNING: LAUNCH/HOOK/ANTICIPATORY SET
How will you get the lesson started? What questions, texts, inquiry, modeling, and/or other
techniques will you use to engage students?
To start the lesson, the teacher will ask the students to describe the solar system. The
teacher will then ask how these objects stay where they are?
MIDDLE: INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES TO FACILITATE STUDENT LEARNING
For example: How will you engage students with ideas/texts to develop understanding? What
questions will you ask? How will you promote question generation/discussion? What activities
will you use to engage students in learning—for individuals, small groups, or the whole class?
How will you incorporate technology? How will you address the academic language demands?
Detail your plan. Note: For math lesson plans, please write or attach every task/problem
students will solve during the lesson—with the correct answers.
Instruction/Modeling The instruction will begin with a short video on the
Solar System. The video will discuss the 8 planets of

the Solar System orbiting the Sun.
Solar System Video - The Best Planet Video for
Educational Purposes
HTTPS://WWW.YOUTUBE.COM/WATCH?V=Z8ABZZNV6Y8
FOLLOWING THE VIDEO, THE TEACHER WILL USE THE
SMARTBOARD TO PRESENT A POWERPOINT ON THE SOLAR
SYSTEM THAT COVERS
Guided Practice The students will use their guided notes from the
PowerPoint to complete two worksheet assignments that
will help them to better understand the material they
have reviewed.
AT THE END OF THE ALLOTTED TIME FOR THEM TO
COMPLETE THEIR WORKSHEETS, THE TEACHER WILL LEAD
A GROUP DISCUSSION ON THE POTENTIAL DANGERS THAT
COULD HAPPEN IF A PLANET DID NOT ORBIT THE SUN
PROPERLY.
Independent Practice Each student will be given a planet or moon and be asked
to calculate the size of the model planet and how far its
distance from the Sun is. They will also need to find the
actual measurements of the planet or moon when the
scale factor is given.
END: CLOSURE
How will you end the lesson in a way that promotes student learning and retention?
To close, THE TEACHER WILL HAVE THE STUDENTS CHECKOFF THEIR ANSWERS TO THEIR
WORKSHEETS AND MAKE SURE THE STUDENTS HAVE THE CORRECT CALCULATIONS ON
THEIR PLANET MEASUREMENTS. THEN THE TEACHER WILL HAVE THE STUDENTS FILL OUT
AN EXIT TICKET “WHAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT FACT YOU LEARNED IN
OUR LESSON TODAY ABOUT THE SOLAR SYSTEM.”
TO FINISH, THE CLASS WILL PLAY KAHOOT AS INDIVIDUALS AGAINST EACH OTHER AND
THE TEACHER. ALL WILL PLAY AND ANSWER THE QUESTIONS ABOUT THE SOLAR SYSTEM
TO SEE WHO GETS THE HIGHEST SCORE AND SEE HOW WELL THEY LEARNED THE
MATERIAL.
EVIDENCE AND ASSESSMENT OF STUDENT LEARNING
How will you know whether your students are meeting your learning objective? What tools
will you use to measure their progress? How will you provide feedback to promote student
learning?
Diagnostic/Pre-
assessment(s) (could be prior
to the lesson)
Students will make a list of everything they already know
about the Solar System.
Formative Assessments/ Students will divide into groups of 4 and complete a essay

Feedback to Learners (part
of the activities in the lesson)
and model project of the solar system and planets using
cardboard, Styrofoam, markers, string and other various
materials.
Summative Assessment
(matches the objective)
Students will be assessed individually on their essay and
model project.
ACADEMIC LANGUAGE DEMANDS
Language Demand(s) Students will be able to list the planets in order.
Language Support(s) Examples of the vocabulary terms will be presented.
Essential Vocabulary Planet, Asteroid, Galaxy, Milky Way, Helium, Hydrogen,
Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus,
Neptune, Pluto.
LU SOE-SPECIFIC LESSON REQUIREMENTS
