Learning Theory Assignment 2
Learning Theory Assignment
Introduction
Motivation, encouragement, engagement, and dedication to the pursuit of educating every
student within the classroom are all necessary traits that a teacher should possess. What strategies
can be implemented to motivate encourage the students who lack the motivation to work hard
and succeed? How as a teacher can an educator be the support the student through it, while
maintain a professional and biblical guidance? All questions that a dedicated educator will ask
themselves so as to improve themselves and create an environment that will help each individual
student thrive.
The student in this case that will be focused on is sixth grader Keven. He comes from a
military family and has moved schools three times within a two-year period. He is currently
living with his father and two younger siblings while his mother is deployed. Overall, Keven is
typically a good student who achieves good grades but finds trouble with the subject math. He
had failed math in the previous year of fifth grade, so his new teacher Ms. Thomas is trying to
encourage him by employing a variety of strategies. Keven has a lack of motivation and does not
try to engage with Ms. Thomas’ strategies. When Keven’s behavior was discussed with his father
his father was unfocused to the situation. That may be due to the applied stresses of working as a
single parent while his wife is overseas. Keven’s father did give insight that math has always
been a struggle for Keven, but along with that some of Keven’s interests were also discussed. He
enjoys skateboarding, computer games, karate, and Sunday school services. Ms. Thomas has a
mission ahead of to try and get Keven to the level he needs to pass state testing that will be
upcoming in the next few months.

An Effective teacher
“Character education is the process by which humans learn to interact with society,
usually through the teaching of core virtues such as courage, justice, and wisdom.” () A teacher
has the responsibility to help guide a student within the school setting so their character can
develop. For Keven it is especially important to gain the values that will help him as he grows
older. Keven will need the guidance as he is living in a single parent household while his mother
is deployed. Not that there is lack from his father, but due to the split attention that his father can
give between him and his siblings there will be less involvement from his father in his
academics. Keven will need to learn how to be more self-reliant attitude in his education the
further he moves along in his education. Not to say that he will not receive guidance or help, but
that he will need to be the self-motivated to get all his work completed. He will need stability
from the classroom so that he may learn to cope with a parent who is far from home. He is also
likely to need help developing socially as he has moved school’s multiple times over a short
period of time. According to the ASYMCA children of military parents are more likely to
experience mental issues (Hester). In which case children like Keven will need extra support
from caretakers, educators and anyone put in a position of role model. Through consistent
support and guidance, he will be able to develop the cornerstones of character that will help him
through the rest of his formative years.
Engaging with Students with Diverse Needs
As stated, prior Keven is in a unique situation as a military kid. His academic needs can
be fulfilled by integrating his interests into the work itself. Although it would not a fool proof
method it would be a start to build the motivation to do the work itself as well as a reinforcement
of a job well done when completed. Self confidence and engagement with Keven and his peers

are going to be the cornerstone for Ms. Thomas so that she may teach all the students to a level to
pass their state exams. For Keven incorporating his love for karate, skateboarding and computer
games would and can be beneficial for his growth in the subject. Especially for kids around
Keven’s age, technology will be a great motivator to learn more about the subject. Ms. Thomas
could incorporate educational computer games to Keven and his peers to boost their motivation
towards math. Keven will need the extra support as a learner in a less conventional living
situation. It is likely he will need more prompting and reminding to do the work, even once his
level of motivation has risen. Creating a space that allows for failure, and help will build
assurance for Keven that he can and will learn the subject he struggles in.
Building Self-Efficacy
The mentality that a child has going into will impact how well they take in information
as well as their emotions towards the subject. When a student does not like a subject or often
struggles in that subject, they will lose their self confidence that they are able to complete the
work. Albert Bandura wrote about self-efficacy and how to build the regulation process of
handling one’s own emotions, thoughts, and actions (Slavin et al., 2022). A child who doubts
their ability in one facet of learning can often lose focus on other skills that they have. A teacher
should help a student learn to set attainable goals for themselves that will help them see progress
and achievement. Ms. Thomas must model confident behavior to her student. Children will learn
from a young age in social contexts depending on the attitude and behavior of those in charge of
them. Their will be outside stressors that could affect Keven such as his home situation. Seeing
his father spread thin to take care of his siblings, and or not having the additional support system
of having his mother home could affect his focus towards school. With patience from Ms.
Thomas and her teaching him how to accomplish attainable goals, Keven will begin to gain a
Learning Theory Assignment 5
positive moral towards math. In turn this will increase Keven’s self-efficacy, which is vital to
Keven’s long-term success.
Developing Relationships
All students will need guidance at some point while learning and a such a teacher must
develop a relationship to their students. This allows for the student s to not feel pressure and
stress that they can not approach their teacher. In Keven’s case it will be especially important for
Ms. Thomas to create a teacher relationship with Keven. “The teacher guides but does not
dominate the learning process.” (Gutek) Keven will need a role model within the school,
someone that he feels comfort asking for academic help. Ms. Thomas will need to make sure she
is approachable. Keven already has doubts towards himself in the subject of math, which means
that Ms. Thomas will have to put extra effort into reaching out to Keven. On the other hand,
Keven may be more receptive toward Ms. Thomas because he will be seeking a motherly and
caring presence with his mother away. Compassion and care from an adult figure will allow for
an encouraging learning environment.
Direct Instruction
The first and foremost way that a teacher will instruct their class will be directly with
lectures on the subject. How a teacher decides to implement their direct instruction within the
classroom can vary depending on the needs of the student. For Keven he struggles with math so
he will need more step-by-step direction and personal guidance. Keven would do well in small
group instruction. Using the idea of cooperative learning from Vygotsky would be an effective
method for Keven. Having Keven work in groups of his peers that all have a varying level of
understanding toward the subject could help him learn both the subject and socially (Slavin et al.,
Learning Theory Assignment 6
2022). If Ms. Thomas were only to instruct her students as a whole, then it is likely that Keven
would continue to struggle with math. He needs a more one on one centered education, paired
with small group work. One on one instruction and small group work will allow for continual
assessments of Keven’s progress. Anytime that Keven continues to fall behind, Ms. Thomas can
put in place homework or classroom work to help her students gain confidence in their academic
abilities.
Technology
Children today have had technology as an integral part of their lives. There was
especially a surge in merging the use of technology and learning during the covid pandemic. At
the time teachers had to make the jump to online. Fir many families this was a difficult time for
their children’s education, but for others it helped soothe their children’s anxieties of the
classroom setting. The plunge into technology in the classroom doesn’t have to be as extreme as
a full takeover, but it should be a utilized tool. Although there is potential to improve teaching
strategies by using technology, there will not always be a jump in improvement due to it. Some
schools would like to push for technology to be used more within the classroom, like tablets
mobile devices and computers (Sackstein et al., 2019). It could be especially beneficially though
to a child like Keven who enjoys playing Computer games. For kids who struggle with a subject
incorporating fun games that allow them to change their mindset on the subject itself. Often
children learn better when they have something they look forward too. If Ms. Thomas were to
include math related games, Keven might look forward to improving his math skills. The
downside of technology for some students would be based on their economic situations, and the
ability to use technology out of school. For Keven that is not likely to be an issue, but still could
be an effecting manner to the situation.
Learning Theory Assignment 7
Motivation
Adding factors such as computer games would be beneficial to the students who have a
hard time finding motivation to do their work. That is not the only form of motivation that can be
used within Ms. Thomas’ classroom. Reinforcement is used and is integral to an education
environment to motivate the learners. Keven lacks motivation for math, but that could possibly
be due to a lack of confidence. Adding the interests of the students into their work can be a way
to promote a positive inclination to work. A common motivation for students is praise. Getting a
student engaged with their peers and the subject can achieve higher levels of learning (Kong,
2021). How to motivate a student can be broken down into a few categories, and for Keven he
will need focus in the emotional and psychological. Ms. Thomas should create achievable goals
that fit within Keven’s level in math and build his confidence up. Once his confident has been
built some he is more likely to try and accomplish problems that he doesn’t understand as well.
Giving Keven math problems and homework involving his interests. Including word problems
that talk about karate or equations including skateboarding it would urge Keven to want to do his
work.
Behavior Management
Behavior and emotion are totally natural, and an experienced teacher will know how to
redirect the less desirable behaviors. As an unmotivated student it would not be unlikely that
Keven would have a lackluster attitude. According to studies a structured classroom will help
decrease the chances of students having disruptive behaviors (Zoromksi et al., 2020). When a
student responds with an appropriate behavior it should be praised and reinforced, whereas a
disruptive behavior should be redirected. A way to decrease behaviors along with structure is
consistency. Keven will need structure and consistency with his home life the way it is. After
Learning Theory Assignment 8
moving schools’ multiple times over the years, he will have lost any consistency he had. Keven
will also need help managing his behavior that could arise from lack of motivation. A student
who has a poor or uninterested attitude can affect others around them as well, and they will feed
of each other. Not only does there need to be consistency in the schedule of the classroom, but
there also should be a consistent effort to keep track of the disruptive behaviors so that plans of
action can be enacted.
Biblical Basis
Phillipians 4:13 says “I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.” (2016) This
scripture is what I think should be the basis for Keven’s educational journey. No student is
without the capabilities to learn the subjects even that they struggle with. Keven is a smart young
man that continues to show that in his other subjects, when it comes to math, he just needs to
believe in himself. As an educator sharing their biblical worldview, this mentality is also
necessary. Through God all things are possible and if faith is put into Him and themselves, that
which seemed hard before will no longer seem as difficult. The compassion that is needed to
guide a student to reach their full potential then the teacher and will need to walk by faith.
Giving Keven the compassion he needs to grow will help him grow as a student, and a young
man who follows Christ. Never should a teacher or student feel they are lacking, because God
will guide them through the good and bad.
Conclusion
In the end of it all there are a multitude of ways that Keven’s situation could be handled,
but all that really matters is his progress. May he be encouraged, motivated, achieving all that he
can academically. Ms. Thomas’ role as Keven’s teacher should be a comfortable safe
Learning Theory Assignment 9
environment that he can thrive. He will be able to develop his character and be able to become
self-efficient so that the skills he learns here will be able to be applied in the future as well. For
Ms. Thomas this will be a growth opportunity as well. She will gain a deeper understanding of
the needs of students in diverse situations, and how best to help them. Through this processes
Ms. Thomas and Keven will be able to develop a stronger bond as student and teacher.
Overall, the tools and skills that will make a student’s career successful rely on the
guidance and support of those in charge. Through instruction geared to help her students develop
and grow Ms. Thomas will develop specific teaching methods that fir her students each semester.
In the instruction that Ms. Thomas gives, she will utilize every way possible for her students to
learn, such ask behavior management, motivation, reinforcement, and technology. Everything
that Ms. Thomas will teach her students should be guided by the belief that no one is ever alone
when they have faith in God. Regardless of whether Keven moves again after his mother comes
back from deployment, he will have become a student ready for anything.
