VIDEO REFLECTION ASSIGNMENT 2
Video Reflection Assignment
During this video, the teacher was very interactive with his students and used a number of
teaching strategies in order to facilitate his student’s learning. Strategies can vary from grade
level to grade level and in this case, he was teaching grade 1 and adapted to ways that he thought
these students would best learn.
One of the first methods I noticed that he used was repetition. In the video, the instructor
would give directions to his students, and they were able to follow his instructions without him
having to explain to them what to do. Using this strategy, it can ensure that if explained or
reviewed enough, tasks or assignments can become less difficult to achieve. Another thing that is
helpful with repetition, is that it helps increase automaticity which can lead to efficiency in the
classroom. When a skill is rehearsed or practiced through repetition, it becomes easier to handle
overtime since a teacher or student no longer has to consciously think about what they are doing
(APL Marketing Team, 2020).
The next strategy that I noticed was the teacher using a multisensory method of
instruction. Multisensory teaching means that when information is presented, the learner is
simultaneously using multiple senses (Gibbons, 2018). Throughout the entire video, you can
notice how the teacher is being very interactive with his students with either movement, auditory,
or visual aids. As seen in the video, the teacher had plenty of picture examples to show students
references of what they were learning. He also had them raise their pencils when they were ready
as well as blowing in their hands when they knew the answers. I think that by using these
different senses for the entire class, allows for them, as a whole, to understand more clearly
regardless of their learning differences.
The final strategy that I would like to discuss from the video is cooperative learning.
VIDEO REFLECTION ASSIGNMENT 3
Cooperative learning is working in groups to achieve a common goal. In this case, the teacher
asks everyone a question and as a group, which is the class, they collectively answer. I think this
is most beneficial because if you have students placed in a setting that they are comfortable and
familiar with, the potential for learning could possibly be higher than being singled out.
Cooperative learning also helps to create a better community and therefore a warmer atmosphere
in the classroom (Rigacci, 2020). Another great thing about cooperative learning is that it can be
scaled to however large or small you would like it to be. In this case, it is the entire classroom,
but a teacher can even choose to do pairs or small groups.
Although I think that this teacher did a wonderful job on his lesson, what I would do
differently in my own personal lesson would be to give a little more time in between asking a
question and then asking for answers. From my experience with first graders, some do not
process questions or answers as quickly as others. This teacher did have the students blow in
their hands to give time between each answer but this was not consistent throughout his entire
lesson. Not every learner processes thinking at the same speed and quality should be measured in
the content of the answer, not the speediness (McCarthy, 2018).
The verse from the Scripture that I think aligns to this lesson comes from Proverbs 9:9
that states “Instruct the wise and they will be wiser still; teach the righteous and they will add to
their learning” (The Holy Bible, 2015). This teacher was making sure that his lesson was going
through to his students in a number of ways, which in return he is making them wiser. Knowing
knowledge or instruction leads to righteousness that can be instilled from a young age. It takes
education for one to comprehend the Scripture. With positive teaching of any age can lead to
some sort of knowledge that will help grow the individual in the direction of wisdom.
