In the video, I found the teacher to be very engaging and focused on his students,
effectively utilizing three strategies whisper in hands, syllable walk, and turn and talk that
enhance student participation and understanding while fostering a collaborative learning
environment.
In the first method of whispering in the hands, the teacher asks the students a question,
and instead of students raising their hands to answer questions, he asks them to whisper in their
hands or fists. Once all of them had their answer, they would release the answer by opening their
hands and saying their answer aloud. This method allows the teacher to keep the students
engaged in the lesson and prevents the students from falling off the topic. The teacher can
evaluate each student’s level of understanding.
The syllable walk is a great tool to help support the learning and understanding of
vocabulary words. The teacher had the students get up and walk around the classroom saying
their vocabulary words and clapping out the number of syllables.
The last activity was turn and talk, this was less teacher-driven, but more student
collaboration. Mr. A had the students collaborate on what they were reading in their book.
Although this activity differs from the other two activities, it is still incredibly engaging for these
students. This response fosters the students' social and communication skills and allows the
teacher to walk around the room. The activity uses the implementation of Vygotsky’s theories
stating that students will benefit from hearing each other “thinking out loud” (Gutek, 2014).
I found that each one of these methods was engaging and I would use them in my
classroom. However, the pace was too fast, he went from one activity to another very quickly.
The desks were remarkably close together. I felt the students did not have much room to move
around, I would like to see a classroom with a bigger area for circle time.

The quote that finds fitting is Proverbs 23:12“Apply your heart to instructions, and your
ears to words of knowledge. (Christian Pure Team, 2024)” This proverb speaks to the heart of
education in that engaging the heart and mind.
