CONCEPTS OF FAMILY DEVELOPMENT
Abstract
The concept of family development and family dynamics has evolved over the decades and
continues to change as modern society adapts to the demands of modernization and shifting
social norms. This paper will evaluate how modernization, issues such as gender roles, diversity,
and political correctness have reshaped the understanding of what constitutes a family and how
family members interact with one another. The concept of what constitutes a family nucleus and
is socially acceptable has now been the subject of much debate. The perceived concept of the
traditional family nucleus no longer accurately represents what God intended family dynamics to
be. The shift in family development to align with societal norms and expectations has led to a
significant change in family dynamics and social acceptance. Therefore, it is necessary to
understand how societal shifts, cultural influences, and economic factors are to be evaluated, as
well as the effects they have on the traditional Christian values of the family nucleus, including
the roles of husband, wife, and children.

The Perceived Versus Informed Concepts
The Family
Based on the reading assignments, "Perceived Versus Informed Concepts of Family
Development" refers to the distinctions between how families understand and experience their
development based on personal perceptions versus evidence-based or research-informed
perspectives. Throughout history, the concept of family has evolved in response to changes in
social modernization, which have altered what constitutes a family and have been shaped by
shifts in social, economic, and cultural contexts. Early family structures often revolved around
work, with extended families living together to support one another and taking care of older
family members. (Verma, M., Seth, S., and Chadha, N., 2017). The conversations of family
dynamics are no longer a simple description that all can agree upon. The average family in the
United States has often been characterized as a traditional family structure, typically consisting
of two parents, a mother and a father, and biological and adopted children, all living together in
one household. (Choi and Marks, 2020)
In the traditional family environment, we are taught that family is everything and that
there is nothing more important than family. Since then, family development has played a
significant role in shaping the dynamics of the nuclear family and the concepts of relationships
and individual identities within the family structure, leading to a deeper understanding of the
importance of family. (Bengtson, & Roberts, 1991; Choi, & Marks, 2020; Peacock & Wong;
2020; Scanzoni, 1993)
Over time, we have seen a significant shift in family dynamics and the development of
morals and values. These essential changes continually evolve in response to various external
and internal factors. When we think of conflicts, we often think of disagreement. Conflict can

arise in multiple personal, societal, economic, moral, and ethical contexts. It stems from a
difference of opinions that can lead to disputes and major confrontations within the structure of
the family dynamics. These same issues are also prevalent in family dynamics. (Smith &
Johnson, 2021)
As a result of these continuous shifts, families have been exposed to drastic changes in
societal family dynamics and development. The need for conflict resolution assumes a more
significant role, as the family nucleus is subject to influences from external and internal factors,
including societal norms, economic pressures, and differing values prevalent in the
modernization of the societal environment. Societal norms and financial challenges have
influenced these shifts and changes, prompting families to seek conflict resolution to maintain
their family dynamics and structure.
France Walsch’s book "Strengthening Family Resilience" focuses on understanding how
families can adapt and grow while facing family dynamic challenges. Walsh’s research closely
examined the influences of "societal changes. Walsh explained how economic pressures, and
evolving norms on family dynamics can cause a paradigm shift within the structure of the family.
Walsh emphasizes the importance of developing resilience within families to navigate conflicts
and maintain healthy relationships. The author provides insightful, practical strategies for
conflict resolution and how societal norms and economics directly impact the family in shaping
family structures and interactions. (Walsh, 2016)
According to Wang & Matz (2020), their study focuses on the importance of family
active communication. Wang & Matz research suggested that practicing active communication is
a practical social skill tools to develop and plays a significant role in resolving family conflicts.
The article explores how effective communication can help resolve disagreements, promote

understanding, and navigate differing opinions among family members. Additionally, it may
investigate the impact of communication styles and patterns on family relationships and overall
conflict management. (Wang & Matz 2020)
According to Garland, conflict is inevitable in a family environment. He also emphasizes
the importance of families addressing conflicts constructively. He highlights that conflict can
arise from multifaceted issues, including differences in opinions and expectations. Garland
suggests that healthy conflict resolution consists of communication, active listening, and a
willingness to understand each other's perspectives. Garland (2012) suggests that families should
view conflict as an opportunity for growth and deeper understanding of individuality within the
family dynamics, rather than as a threat to harmony. Overall, he advocates for approaches that
foster reconciliation and unity, promoting the idea that effectively navigating conflict can
strengthen family ties. (Garland, 2012)
We have witnessed a paradigm shift in family structure due to the multicultural nature of
society and the modernization of family dynamics, which no longer align with traditional family
structures. The shift has resulted in a growing population of nontraditional family structures and
dynamics. Many traditional households are experiencing a shift toward more independent living
arrangements. According to the United States Census Bureau, there has been an increase in
single-family households, which has risen due to various factors, including divorce, separation,
individualism, economic conditions, and lifestyle preferences. (U.S. Census Bureau. (2020)
Individuals may choose to live separately due to a variety of personal reasons, including
identifying as LGBTQ+. As many traditional households have been abandoned due to societal
restructuring of family dynamics, this has led to family separation and a departure from
conventional family structures. As more people come out and express their identities as lesbian,

gay, bisexual, transgender, or non-binary, they may seek to create their own spaces that reflect
their authentic selves. (McGoldrick, Preto, & Carter, 2015)
The family in the 21st century continues to undergo diverse structures and dynamic
changes influenced by social, cultural, technological, and economic shifts. In today's society,
families are no longer defined explicitly as traditional. Family structures have taken many forms,
including single-parent families, blended families, same-sex couples, and chosen families, which
have led to a broader definition and understanding of family dynamics. Societal changes have
been the driving force in redefining family dynamics with societal modernization and
technological advancements, work-life balance, physical and mental health considerations, and
cultural and social activism. (Caron, 2021)
Therefore, the significant changes in family structures and dynamics in contemporary
society will continue to evolve and change. It can be expected that the multicultural landscape
and modernization will continue to form a departure from traditional family models, often
influenced by religious norms. As a result, nontraditional family arrangements are expected to
continue growing, with many individuals opting for independent living.
The shift in family structure is significantly influenced by the fact that individuals live
longer, thanks to technological advances, science, and medicine. (Vaupel & Lundström, 2019)
According to Skolnick (2013), there have been significant changes in family life cycle patterns
over the past century, particularly in relation to life expectancy. Skolnick in his research
indicated that the impact of mortality on families continues to decrease as new technology,
science, and medicine advances are introduced. This illustrates how advancements in health and
longevity have reshaped and changed family dynamics and experiences. (Skolnick, 2013)

Family Roles
Traditionally, the family has two primary roles: the husband and the wife. There are two
individual units with specific roles within the nucleus of family dynamics. (Balswick, et
al.,2021) The husband is often seen as the head of the family, the provider, the primary
breadwinner, and the protector, ensuring the family's safety. The husband is usually the parent in
the discipline and guidance of the children. He is responsible for maintaining family traditions
and mentoring his children to develop sound moral and ethical standards and beliefs.
Additionally, the husband is usually responsible for making key decisions regarding the family.

Cultural, social, and historical family traditions have traditionally shaped the wife's role.
The wife's traditional role within the household has been as a helper to her husband. The wife has
been seen as organizer of the house and social events, hosting gatherings and fostering
relationships among family members and friends. Traditionally, her primary role consists of
caretaker and companionship to her husband and other family members, i.e., children. (Balswick,
et al.,2021).
Children have a critical role within traditional family dynamics and deserve to be treated
with love and respect. Their roles can vary depending on their cultural background, but within
conventional family settings, they are primarily centered on respecting their parents and elders,
obedience, and learning lifelong skills within the household. They learn to understand the values
of family traditions, with a primary focus on education and personal development. As they enter
adolescence, children often become involved in sports, music, and other social activities with
their peers. At home, they are expected to take on more responsibility by doing chores, caring
for younger siblings, and helping with elderly family members. As young adults aged 18 to 22,

their plans may vary based on economic status; they might leave for college, seek permanent
independence, or enter the workforce. (Murray & Wylie, 2019)
Societal modernizations have influenced the contemporary roles of parents and children
within the family structure. Parents are relinquishing their responsibilities and allowing societal
modernization to dictate their children's sexual identity. Children are no longer being taught
traditional family values or their roles within the nucleus of the family. These shifts in
understanding contemporary family dynamics can lead to confusion about their responsibilities
and a lack of knowledge about the importance of family dynamics.
The era of traditional family roles has significantly shifted from its original meaning.
Several factors have caused a drastic change in the structure of families. Economically, in many
societies, women are now the primary source of income or have the highest income.
Additionally, issues of gender identity and ongoing debates surrounding gender and transgender
matters have further influenced family dynamics. According to an article by Coleman, evolving
concepts of gender identity have influenced family dynamics and roles, resonating with the idea
that children may be confused about their roles and identities. (Coleman, 2020)
The Role of Religion/Spirituality in the Family
Throughout history, we have learned and seen a significant shift in religious beliefs
within the family nucleus since the creation of Adam and Eve. This aspect of human history has
shaped cultural values, norms, and practices. Religious beliefs have played a significant role in
shaping family structures and the transmission of cultural and moral values across generations.
(Smith, M., 2021) In the scriptures, we learn that God commands us to teach our children based
on the spiritual teachings found within them. Deuteronomy 6:6-7 (New International Version,

20110) "These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on
your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when
you lie down and when you get up." According to a recent study by Wood (2021), a significant
change and shift within Christian communities has occurred. Wood indicated that the change can
largely be attributed to adopting moral and ethical standards that align with contemporary
societal trends. (Wood, 2021)
This shift has created tension between traditional beliefs and modern interpretations of
values (Wood, C., 2021). Additionally, a religious report indicates that members of Christian
communities are increasingly choosing to move away from traditional spiritual practices (Pew
Research Center, 2021). There is still hope. Regardless of the decline in traditional services, we
are seeing a change in today's society. Individuals are exploring spirituality in more personal and
unconventional ways. This movement can be attributed to social media platforms spreading the
Gospel. (Campbell, & Tsuria, 2021). We are also witnessing a revival of television ads promoting
Jesus. Society has been witnessing celebrities proclaiming their faith in Jesus. Thanking Jesus for
their career success. People are seeking spiritual retreats, workshops, and events that focus on
self-discovery and personal growth. Although traditional religious services may be witnessing
lower attendance, the quest for spirituality and belief in God is evolving. (Ritchie, 2020)
Personal Application
The assignment has allowed me to pause and reflect on my traditional religious
background and family structure. Based on what I have learned, I come from a traditional family
structure and a rigid family environment. My Dad was the head of the house and made all
decisions concerning the family; his decision was final and absolute. Although he was very strict,
we all loved him very much. He ensured we had a nice place to call home and food on the table..

My mother was the caregiver; she was responsible for ensuring we were taken care of. I come
from a large family consisting of eight children, with me being the youngest.
I had five sisters, and the three oldest took turns caring for me when my mother could not
do so. My brothers also sheltered me, ensuring I didn't get into trouble or hurt. The family had
strong Christian ties to the church. We were brought up Pentecostal. The church had strict rules,
which I did not care for. There was no smoking, drinking, dancing, or going to the movies, and
very little television. I also remember that my sisters were not allowed to wear pants. My parents
were from Puerto Rico, and we spoke Spanish at home. I am grateful for the parents I had. We
grew up loving God, respecting the Word of God, and the Holy Spirit. As one by one we left
home, we always remained close.
I served my country for four decades, twenty years in the United States Marine Corps and
the Drug Enforcement Administration. Throughout my career, my family has always been there
for me, throughout the forty years of service. My parents’ influence and my religious upbringing
have been a blessing. In family gatherings, we talk about how Mom and Dad worked so hard to
keep us together and always be there for each other.
To this day, I have kept my family traditions alive. I decorate the house with Christmas
lights yearly and cook the traditional family Christmas dinner. This assignment has also helped
me have a better understanding of the complexities of same sex marriages, and the challenges
same sex couples have in raising a family. Although the scriptures condemn same sex
relationships as Christian, we need to love the sinner and hate the sin. Romans 1:26-27 (NIV)
states: "Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged
natural sexual relations for unnatural ones. In the same way, the men also abandoned natural

relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed shameful acts
with other men and received in themselves the due penalty for their error." (NIV, 2011)
In Conclusion
Throughout the years, I have learned that I have a moral and ethical obligation to live my
life in a way that is pleasing to God, not only for myself but also for my family. As parents, we
have a moral and ethical responsibility to teach our family members what is right and wrong, and
to learn to be sincere and honest with ourselves. I taught my Children to treat others the same
way we want to be treated, honestly and respectfully. We must face struggles and conflicts with a
clear understanding that sometimes people will disagree or challenge our ethical and moral
values. Therefore, I choose to remain steadfast in the Lord, trust that he is always in control,
regardless of the situation, and not judge a book by its cover. Matthew 7:1 states, "Judge not, that
you be not judged.
