In order to understand the relationship among the variables being tested, a statistical
analysis using moderation or mediation must be conducted (Hayes, 2022). The figures below
will demonstrate a moderator and mediation analysis. Furthermore, a description of the research
problem, question, hypothesis, and variables are presented for each analysis type below (Figures
1 and 2) (Hayes, 2022).
Moderator Analysis
Research Problem
The relationship between bodily shame and depression as moderated by gender amongst
high school students.
RQ1: To what extent, if any, does gender moderate the predictive relationship between bodily
shame and depression?
H01: Gender does not significantly moderate the predictive relationship between bodily shame
and depression.
H11: Gender significantly moderates the predictive relationship between bodily shame and
depression.

Gender (a categorical variable with a nominal level of measurement)
Race (a categorical variable with a nominal level of measurement)
Depression, as measured by DASS-Depression (a continuous variable with interval level
of measurement)
Bodily Shame, as measured by ESS (a continuous variable with interval level of
