PRELIMINARY COMMUNICATION AND ADVOCACY PLAN 2
Legal Entanglement Project: Part 1 – Preliminary Communication and Advocacy Plan
Stakeholder Interview #1
Stakeholder(s) Name(s): Jennifer Washington
Stakeholder Position or Group: Student Hearings Officer
Date of Interview: Thursday, October 5, 2023
Summary of Interview
Assignment explained and “Religious/Moral Beliefs” policy reviewed together, which
allows a student to opt out of class during an activity not in sync with own beliefs. Alternative
activities cover missed class/state content requirements, Stakeholder said. Asked about potential
liability if student’s grades precluded ability to miss additional class, restricting right of
nonparticipation. The alternative activity option covered this concern. Agreement with above
remedy, but had wondered whether student’s academic performance prevented leaving class.

Stakeholder Interview #2
Stakeholder(s) Name(s): David Wilson (Additional info: my neighbor; his son cuts my lawn)
Stakeholder Position or Group: Parent/Father and School Facilities personnel
Date of Interview: Thursday, October 5, 2023
Summary of Interview
Read “Religious/Moral Beliefs” policy from Student Handbook to parent and asked if
he thought the student’s rights were honored by optional nonparticipation and an alternative
assignment. He felt that sufficed. If student had poor grades and could not afford to miss class,
an alternative project that could replace class/state content and time requirements could work,
he said. This parent believed First Amendment rights were upheld. I explained he would
receive an emailed summary of our call, with possible concerns and advocacy ideas.
