Clint,
Thank you for your discussion thread. I thoroughly enjoyed your commentary on
Humility. How easy it is to read and agree that our pride makes us move away from humility
and is what dwells in our wicked hearts. What struck me and truly stood out was when Murray
states, “Humility before God is nothing if not proved in humility before men”.1 It is so easy for
me to posture myself as ‘humble’ before God. My heart has been dissecting this concept since
working through this text and understanding that my relationships with man are what will be
judged. How foolish I was to think that my attitude towards God and my ‘good works’ would be
sufficient evidence to present myself before the throne of the Almighty. How perplexing it has
been knowing that how I relate to those I love and those I don’t will be the measure by which I
am held against.
I love your take on chapter seven. The idea or feeling that Murray made you feel like
getting saved all over again shows the gravity of humility over pride. Holiness without humility
is not possible. The Murray quote that jumped off the page at me was, “Humility is the bloom
and beauty of holiness”.2 In reading through this text, I found some of the vernacular different
and challenging to digest. Thank you for catching the quote regarding being clothed with
humility and being a servant to others. The consolation in the text was that a true servant heart is
the key to humility and walking with a humble spirit. For me service is my first love language.
What a comfort to know that my works are part of the sanctification process in my walk with
Jesus. Putting my service to others as primary is the key to a fulfilling Christian life but one that
points toward holiness.
