Introduction
is the church that I am currently both attending and serving at; there are two campuses, both
located in . The location I serve at in was recently launched as a branch-off from the original
campus located in . This assessment will be focusing on the model of family-based discipleship
that has been incorporated into the church and will discuss the outcomes of the model utilized. It
is necessary to note that this assessment does not seek to “bash” however there is a reality to
currently being unhealthy. I am working as a in an effort to both change the discipleship culture
and work towards a biblical approach to the combination of church/family. Renfro Jones
discusses several different family discipleship models in his book Perspectives on Family
Ministry and out of the models he discusses, the programmatic model would be the best fit.1 The
programmatic model is the best fitting model for in my opinion because the ministries (adult,
youth, and kids) are completely separate. These distinct ministries have different focuses: kids
uses its own curriculum and focuses purely on the development of children and has both adult
leaders and teenage leaders; youth uses its own curriculum and focuses purely on the
development of teenagers and has adult volunteers; adults focuses primarily on the development
of adults aged 18-30, the teaching comes from either the lead pastor or the pastors of the
respective campuses. The result of each ministry having a separate and distinct role is the
development of a culture/congregation that is ignorant to the understanding and implementation
of family discipleship.
