Abstract
There has been exponential growth in single parent households within the past few decades.
Moreover, there has also been a rise in consumer Christianity. Many parents bring their children
to church on Sunday mornings and believe through that action, they are doing their part in the
spiritual development of their children. While perhaps not directly stated, it is often subtly
implied that parents expect the children’s ministry to teach their children everything they need to
know about Jesus and about the Bible. Moreover, that it is the church’s responsibility to
spiritually form their children. Unfortunately, many churches are not doing anything to teach
them otherwise. The churches that attempt to inform parents, do this in a passive manner through
handouts, which many parents consider supplemental to what their children are learning at
church instead of as part of the primary instruction they should be giving at home. This paper
will examine the responsibility of parents as the primary disciple makers of their children, but
