I. List of 50 Observations on John 17
1) Jesus does not close his eyes to pray. He lifts his eyes toward heaven.
2) Jesus calls God Father.
3) John must be nearby Jesus to hear this prayer in so much detail. The Holy Spirit is helping
him remember the details.
4) Knowing God and knowing Jesus Christ his Son are the key to eternal life.
5) Jesus has authority to give eternal life. He has been given authority over “all flesh.”
6) Jesus has glorified God on earth, and he wants to walk in the glory he had in the time prior to
the earth existing.
7) Jesus represented God in the earth.
8) The words that Jesus spoke came from the Father.
9) Jesus did not have his own agenda, he sought solely to please the Father.
10) God is glorified in Jesus and Jesus is glorified in those who believe on him.
11) Jesus knows someone is about to betray him. He refers to him as “lost.”
12) Even though he knew that the others were about to run and deny him, he only considers
Judas lost.

43) Jesus is the bridge connecting us to the Father.
44) Jesus wants the world to com to the knowledge of the Truth, that he is the Christ the Son of
the living God.
45) All glorification for man to receive only through Jesus.
46) People who have come to know the truth must stand firm in it.
47) Believers in the earth need one another.
48) Without Christ one cannot have an understanding of who the father truly is.
49) As Jesus honored God’s name and represented him well, so should believer honor the name
of Christ and represent him well.
50) Success for the Body of Christ is going to come from working together.
II. Questions
1) What does this text reveal about how/what we should believe about God?
The first thing we should believe about God according to the text is that he sent Jesus
(John 13:3). We should believe the Jesus is the giver of eternal life and that only through
believing in him will we receive of the Father. We should believe that God loves us by reflecting
on the love that Christ has for us (John 17:23).
2) What does this text reveal regarding how you should act for the sake of Christ, his church,
others, or yourself?
The text implies that a believer for the sake of Christ and others, should be humble.
Humility is a necessary element to follow Christ. Jesus humbled himself in doing the will of the
Father. If we are to fulfill the will of Christ in our own lives and the church as a whole, humility
has to be a mandate.
III. Identify Lessons Learned from Meditating on John 17:
I learned that Jesus wanted to make sure that those who follow him were protected. He
understood the importance of unity amongst the believers and that it was necessary for the
ministry of the truth to go forth. He understood what true unity really meant because of his
relationship with the Father in heaven. Jesus was acting as our High priest in John 17 interceding
on our behalf. I also learned that Jesus’ prayer of unity for the church has not been answered yet.
With all the divisions we see amongst the denominations and various Christian organizations we
must evaluate what we can do to come together so that this prayer of our Lord will be fulfilled.
