Making Disciples
Whenever any group sets out to work together to accomplish a goal, the tasks, methods, and
objectives need to be defined, clearly communicated, and understood by everyone involved.
Exercise:
Ask two questions to the group. without discussing their answers with the rest of their group
The first question we asked is simple: “What’s the purpose of the church?”
The second question we ask is “what is a disciple”
Second question brings the team face to face with the heart of their purpose and values as a
church.
These can be some of the answers you will get:
•A disciple of Jesus is a person who is becoming spiritually mature. This occurs when
a Christian knows his Bible inside and out. That’s what’s most important in our
church: knowing the Bible.
•A disciple is a person who cares for the lost. He regularly invites his friends, neighbors,
and unsaved family members to our church so they can hear about Jesus. That’s what’s
most important: getting people in the door of the church so they hear the good news! We
want to make the weekend events as understandable to the lost and immature as we can.
•A disciple is a person who is doing life with others. He has made all he has available to
others in the sphere of relationships. He is focused on working together in a small group to
serve some need in the community. He wants to right a wrong in the culture in the name of
Jesus.
•A disciple is a person who loves the poor and marginalized in Jesus’ name. We live and
love like Jesus lived and loved. That means we’re especially kind, compassionate, and
tolerant to everybody we meet. That’s what’s most important: love wins!
•A disciple is a person who has come to understand what righteous ness is and is being
sanctified so that he lives differently in the world. He abstains from sin and loves the Word
of God.
•A mature disciple worships God with his or her resources and energy. They want to know
God and make him known. The worship of God is central to a mature believer’s life.
•A mature disciple is a witness for Christ in every way. He knows how to win someone to
Jesus and participates in sharing his or her faith as individuals and as a part of the local
church.
It’s essential for the leadership of a church to have a unified understanding of their goal and
purpose as a church. And it’s equally important that they have a unified methodology to
accomplish that goal
Define what a disciple is: Matthew 4:19: “He [Jesus] said to them, ‘Follow me, and I will make
you fishers of men’ ” (esv).

THIS IS AN INVITATION... JESUS LEADS, WE FOLLOW!
Following means that we recognize and accept who Jesus is as Lord, leader, and master of our
lives. He’s the one who initiates and guides. In turn, we respond to his leadership and direction.
Following Jesus means acknowledging that Jesus is in front, and we must place ourselves behind
him. John 12:26 speaks of this process: “Whoever serves me must follow me; and where I am,
my servant also will be.”
John 14:23–24 connects our obedience to Christ to our hearts and affections: “Anyone who
loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make
our home with them. Anyone who does not love me will not obey my teaching.” A willingness
to follow Jesus is evidence of our love for him, and though our obedience to Jesus is not perfect
(Heb. 12:1), it should be evident and growing.
