Dr. Dobson (2004) “The New Strong Willed Child “text book was written to help and
guide parents to better understand their child. This book explains ways to better understand your
child’s temperaments and also what may cause or influence them to do some things they do or
may have done. Each chapter in this book helps you to understand the basics of what is going on
with your child, why they act and do certain things that they do or maybe have done. And it
guides you to possible things that you can do to help you through some of your concerns or
things that you may be dealing with (Dobson (2004).
I had never heard of a strong willed child before reading this text book Dobson
(2004),After reading this book I had gotten to thinking about my children and the description
this book gives on a strong willed child describes one of my sons. My son had been diagnosed
with ADHD now this is a handful itself to deal with. I guess you could say that as this text
described a strong willed child in my eyes I would say that strong willed and ADHD child are the
same. So that would be my question to ask and that would be, what is the difference between a
strong willed child and a child with ADHD? Strong-willed kids are spirited and courageous.
They want to learn things for themselves rather than accepting what others say, so they test the
limits over and over. Children with ADHD may be hyperactive and unable control their impulses.
Or they may have trouble paying attention. They both have impulsive behaviors, now with my
son having ADHD his moods would be off balanced and he kind of seemed down a lot and
closed up staying to himself. Now most of the time I would find him destroying items but then I
would find him in a total concentration trying to fix these objects and did it with success. He was
also very active and could never stay still nor stay doing nothing even if he was just touching an
object he had to always be doing something. As Dobson (2004) text states a child with ADHD a

ticking clock or sounds can drown out a voice, although an intriguing project can absorb them
for hours. (Dobson (2004) pp.225). And this is very true.
