Divorce
Introduction
The topic for interview was divorce. Sometimes the parents decide to end the marriage
because of several factors, the children born in that marriage are likely to bear the consequences
of the divorce negatively. The family needs to understand this topic from the perspective of the
effects of divorce and single parenthood. The family should understand that marital dissolution
affects the success of the children, their mental health and future romantic relationships
(Donahey, 2018). Several cases have been witnessed where the children's mental health is
affected and have anxiety as well as depression as a result of marriage dissolution processes
(Demir-Dagdas et al., 2018). The children show reduced input and productivity in schools.
Further, the issue of marriage is supported by most religions. For instance, in
Christianity, marriage is supposed to be forever and people need to love each other until death.
The Muslims and the Hindus also appraise marriage and expect that the people who are joined by
the marriage covenant honor it until death. So, divorce is breaking the religious covenant
between the two people. Most of the communities are guided by religious and ethical beliefs in
making their decision. So, when one acts differently from religious values or norms they may be
regarded as doing the wrong thing. Also, the effects of divorce on partners and children can be
solved through faith. As mentioned earlier, parents' divorce may affect the future romantic
relationship of the children. Shimkowski et al. (2018) states that college students from divorced
families are not close to their parents and change the expectations and view of romantic
relationships.
The interview was conducted by an anonymous person. The interview focused on
religious and social factors of divorce. He was of Asian descent and believed that a person
3
should be able to select the right partner. He continued to highlight that most people are
considering divorce other than settling the family disputes that brings the disagreements. As
people come together, when there are having their wedding, they take the vows to take care of
each other and they are blessed to reproduce and bring up their children in love. As they grow
and focus on society's beliefs, they fail to focus on the purpose of the marriage. Marriage
according to his religion, is not only between two parties as the current society dictates. When a
man and a woman come together through marriage, the two families are also brought together,
so, in such a society, divorce is seen as something bad. Therefore, before the two decide to
divorce they seek other remedies.
History
The struggles and controversies around divorce were the religious aspects of marriage.
From a religious perspective, marriage is a lifetime union that people get into. So, when they
decide to end the union, religion makes it hard because the couple is expected to seek a solution
through religion. In some cases, people may remain in abusive marriages because of the
historical beliefs guided by religious values. As the interviewee contributes on the topic, Indians’
marriages are expected to be lifetime union. With the rise of women empowerment and
employment, women do not stay in abusive marriages because they can provide for their kids.
So, even single parents provide and give the basic needs required by the children. That is another
reason for the high rates of divorce cases.
List of Questions and Insights
What is your view on Divorce?
Do you think that rates are higher than before?
Is divorce ethical?
4
What are the factors contributing to divorce?
Do you think it harms the children and the partners?
Have you ever experienced divorce or a close friend or relative? How were they affected?
By interacting with diverse ethnicities and people of different religions, the interviewee
believes that if people cannot be able to resolve issues it better to part ways. Though he still
believes that divorcing may not always provide a safe environment to bring the kids up. The
children need to have full parental love from their parents who closely monitor them as they
grow. According to Adidi & Obiagwu, domestic violence is battering family life in society. The
family was always seen as a bedrock of society with certain values and ethics but the life of the
family is losing the held meaning. Divorce is high as people take it as a resolution to domestic
violence. That aligns with the interviewee's thoughts on the causes of divorce in today's society.
A family was seen to instill values and pass the cultural beliefs to generations. Through this unit
in society, it improves morality and defines people's identity. With the increasing rate of divorce,
the values and beliefs strongly held by the families are reducing (Donahey, 2018). The matter is
a concern to sociologists which focuses on understanding how society has shaped the behavior of
divorce. Society and the laws are widely embracing divorce as domestic dispute resolution other
than advocating other avenues like faith.
Conclusion
Divorce is mainly used in solving the problem between the partners. In case there are
family disputes or violence, the easiest way that partners consider is parting ways and living
separately. The issue is of concern because it affects the family benefits and values holding the
family together, the faith, and the future of the children born in that marriage. Children brought
up in a divorced marriage have future problems of developing a romantic relationship. As the
5
interviewee explains that different faiths do not advocate for divorce but the worldview is
different which have given empowerment to leave a marriage with problems. So, sociologists
need to focus on interest in family life and crisis as well as the changes occurring in this social
unit.
