History and Current Position
Business as a Mission (BAM) involves companies running their operations according
to God’s word and promoting it (Rundle & Lee, 2022). BAM business owners are driven not
only by profit but by the desire to advance God’s word in their work and draw people to God.
BAM organizations partner with churches and other businesses to provide resources to
mobilize church missions and tackle global problems (Rundle & Lee, 2022). BAM can be
traced back to the mid-twentieth century when it was called tentmaking (Gort, 2018). The
founders of BAM wanted to see if one could use their professional work to promote God’s
word.
Traditional tentmaking was influenced by Apostle Paul, which had its challenges like
time for work may take away time that would otherwise be used for missions, where the
tentmakers could get money to sustain their missions, and the tentmakers would be expected
to submit to the church’s authority (Gort, 2018). The mission of BAM at that time was to
spread the word of God to all but primarily to countries where Christianity was not prevalent.
Tentmaking was seen as a solution for spreading the Gospel to countries where missionaries
were not allowed to enter. Tentmaking was changed to BAM in the late 20th century when
business took center stage in promoting God’s word (Gort, 2018).
BAM encourages people to do their work well and contribute to the good of society
by pleasing God. BAM redefines missionary and ministry work; it gives people a broader
way of promoting God’s word (Gort, 2018). In the 21st century, BAM has increased in
popularity with more organizations existing internationally. BAM’s current position is
profitable businesses should promote God’s word through the spiritual, economic,
sustainability, and social impacts they have on society (Komatsu Cipriani et al., 2020). BAM
ensures companies focus their operations on promoting the word of God in their daily work.
BAM organizations are international organizations that ensure those who need to learn about

God are reached but not in the traditional missionary
way.
How the Research Solution Influences BAM
BAM organizations aim to develop profitable solutions for the company and provide
opportunities to promote social, spiritual, and economic good for society (Rundle & Lee,
2022). The deep learning browser extension will be affordable for the users helping to
provide a solution that helps protect people from ransomware attacks on their IoT devices.
Ransomware attackers are attacking hospitals and nursing homes, putting vulnerable people
at risk of death due to a lack of essential services (Gurjar et al., 2021). “Defend the weak and
the fatherless; uphold the cause of the poor and the oppressed” (New International Version,
2011, Psalm 82:3). This bible verse shows that the helpless should be protected from those
who seek to take advantage of them. The deep learning browser extension is simple to use for
everyone and easily accessible, defending people from ransomware attacks they cannot afford
to pay for decryption of their IoT devices.
Theoretical Implementation of BAM
The first step in implementing BAM for the deep learning browser extension is
defining the goal of setting up the solution as BAM. Defining the goals guides what should
be done to promote God’s word and society’s greater good (Rundle & Lee, 2022). Next,
research should be done on the countries that mostly require this service, cannot afford it, or
do not have the expertise to develop a solution. This will ensure that those who need the
solution have access to it, helping them protect their vulnerable IoT devices from ransomware
attacks. This will help to promote access to a more reliable ransomware attack solution to all,
helping to reduce data theft and encryption of IoT devices. The research will influence how
BAM will be implemented in different countries, and the last step is monitoring and
reviewing BAM measures regularly. Monitoring and reviewing will help ensure BAM is
4
doing well in promoting the social and economic good of society by protecting the vulnerable
population whose lives are affected by ransomware attacks on IoT devices.
