Discussion Board 1: 30 points
When designing a project in web design, a designer should make sure their sites can be
supported on multiple web browsers. Web browsers are a software application that enable you to
browse the internet and access websites. Competing web browsers focus on features such as speed,
security and simplicity. The top five that I believe are important are Chrome, Internet Explorer, Firefox,
Safari, and Opera. According to The Best Internet Browser Software of 2015, the top 5 browsers are
ranked Firefox (9.85), Chrome (9.73), Opera (9.3), Safari (9), and Internet Explorer (8.63). I chose the
order of the browsers based on personal preferences. I use Chrome 98% of the time because of its
secure browsing and sync capabilities that allow a customized browser on any computer. Any other time,
Internet Explorer is a familiar browser I use. This browser is known for its security system that sufficiently
combats against phishing and malware. Although it sometimes lacks supported configurations with Mac
OS, Android, and iOS, it is still rated a “good” browser. Firefox was ranked the highest browser due to its
new design that is based off of simplicity and speed concepts. Safari has impressive launch and load
times and superb security features. Although it also lacks in supported configurations with Android and
doesn’t have customization features, it offers a “clean and unobtrusive” browser that users enjoy.
Opera’s browser contains cutting edge multimodal features and competitive navigation speeds. Opera
offers secure, fast, and feature-rich browsing. Because this is a newly evolving browser, it is missing
features such as parental control and has low compatibilities with some sites. Other browsers, such as
Torch, Maxthon, SeaMonkey, Avant Browser, and Deepnet Explorer lack in security, features, help and
support, and speed and capability.

When designing a web site, one must consider the differences between a traditional website and
one that is designed for mobile device interface. Major differences include interaction techniques, how
people read, context of use, and the number of things grasped at a glance. On a traditional website, a
user is able to use the mouse cursor to navigate through a web site. When on a mobile device, the
mouse cursor is usually a finger or a stylus. Thus in mind, a mobile site should have cut features making
the site simple. This allows enlarged interface elements to avoid the “fat finger” problem of clicking on
something you didn’t mean to click. There is a major difference in context between a traditional website
and a mobile device website. On a traditional website, due to the space available, there is usually more
room for detailed content. A mobile device is usually short, sweet and to the point. If a website designer
chooses to keep the same amount of information on a site designed for a mobile device, content may be
delayed in loading due to its complexity. Context of use between traditional websites and mobile sites is
an important factor to keep in mind. Traditional websites are usually used in work or for professional
use, whereas a mobile site is usually used for on the go quick information or personal use. The number
of things grasped at a glance is key when designing a website. A website should have a well-balanced,
inviting display. Main points and proper sizing and positioning is important to remember when
establishing the difference between traditional website and mobile sites. Overall, traditional sites need a
site separate from mobile sites, and mobile sites should be designed differently than a traditional site,
but offer the same information. Both types of websites should include good use of device capabilities,
intelligently handle device limitations and provide similar user experience on all devices.
