Topic: Strong Arguments and Hard Problems
Question/Prompt:

2)What did you consider to be the most difficult problem facing young-Earth creation?
Reply Prompt
Respond to a classmate’s post with a 150-word (minimum) summary of a different young-Earth resource than the
one they used by that classmate in their initial post. This summary and reference must also be different from the one
in your own initial post. Remember to reference your article in Turabian format.

After reading The Quest and studying the arguments for young-earth creation, I would
consider the testimony of scripture to still be the strongest argument for young-earth creation. I
think this is linked to the fact that when thinking of the reason we believe scripture is all due to
notion that we believe that it holds authority and thus has to be believed. If we are to believe that
Scripture holds authority its because of the notion that its inspiration came from God. “All
Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for
training in righteousness.” (2 Timothy 3:16) Only young-earth creationism is able to be
consistent with the features of God highlighted throughout the Bible.(1)
Wood acknowledges in his writing that Genesis is an historical accounting of the story of
creation. If we are to take Genesis as history then how can remove what is says, combined with
knowing how its authorship understood how its audience would interpret it? Ken Ham speaks on
this in an article. “To attempt to fit millions of years into the Bible, you have to invent a gap of
time that almost all Bible scholars agree the text does not allow — at least from a hermeneutical
perspective. Or you have to reinterpret the days of creation as long periods of time (even though
they are obviously ordinary days in the context of Genesis 1). In other words, you have to add a
concept (millions of years) from outside Scripture into God’s Word. This approach puts man’s
fallible ideas in authority over God’s Word.”(2) So this basically means you have to add
something from outside the Word to justify its claims, which would be a slippery slope that
allows criticism of all parts of the Bible.
YEC biggest problem is explained in this quote from Biologos talking about biblical
interpretation and evolutionary creation: “This articulation of inerrancy acknowledges that the
mode of inspiration is difficult to understand; affirms the humanity of the biblical authors;
recognizes the breadth of literary styles and ancient literary conventions in the Bible; assumes
that biblical authors had a pre-scientific understanding of natural phenomena; and does not seek
to explain away apparent difficulties in the text.”(3)
