Quiz: Self-Evaluation: Counseling
Techniques
Question 1
12.5 / 12.5 pts
I have completed the self-assessment on page 31 in chapter 1 of
Young
(2021).
True
False
In what skills areas do you feel confident or very confident (list at least
2)? In
what skills areas do you need more confidence (list at least
2)? Your Answer:
The skill area that I feel confident in is communication. I think that I
am good at this because I have to reword things in a certain way in
order for me to be able to comprehend them. Therefore, because I
am so conscious of this I make sure to ask if things I say make sense.
If they do not then I will reword what I am trying to say so that it
does make sense.
The area that I feel that I need to be more confident in is my body
language. I have practiced not giving off any facial expressions when
speaking with people but one thing I have noticed is that I do some
hand movements that people get distracted by. I am not sure why I
do this it is a habit that I have picked up in order to help me
concentrate.
What will you do to improve in the areas you are not as confident in?
Your Answer:
I will make sure that I tell myself before I start speaking with
someone not to do the hand motions. If I realize I am doing it without
knowing I am doing it, then I will stop it immediately. I do not want to
portray that I am wanting them to hurry up or any other messages
while they are trying to open up with me.

Question 4

On page 21, Young (2021) discusses how helping professionals
need the
courage to examine their own personal problems and to seek help
and guidance for themselves when needed. Reflect on the following
two characteristics below of courageous helping professionals:
1.
You are willing to admit that you need to change and grow.
2.
You are able, for the most part, to deal with the cruelties that other
people inflict on
each other without being so disturbed that it disrupts your own life or
your ability to help.
After reflecting on these characteristics, answer the
questions below:
•
How true is this for you?
•
How can you
grow? Your Answer:
These statements are very true for me. I am a former addict,
therefore, I have had to admit a lot of things within myself that I
needed to change and grow. I think that because of my past
experiences this gives me an advantage. I can help people
understand the importance of this and I can also help them figure
out the certain way they need to do this for themselves.
For the second statement, I would say this is true as well. I think it is
very important to understand that sometimes we as people do not
act like ourselves and we do things that hurt others or ourselves. I
find it easier to accept their behaviors by understanding that they
are not really themselves at this moment. Then I can help them
design a plan to get them to themselves where they would not act in
such ways. It is like being sick with a cold. One has no energy and
may even become angry with people who are trying to help. Once
they feel better they then apologize and say I am sorry I was not
myself. I see people in the same way through many different
circumstances.
