Discussion Thread: Reflective Counseling
There are many benefits to reflective counseling. In my life
specifically, it has helped me to be able to step outside of myself and
into someone else’s shoes. The way I learned how to do this was
from my own past experiences with addiction. I tell people all the
time when it comes to my walk, that I always thought that everyone
else was the problem. People would say the same thing about me like
I had a bad attitude for example and to me, I felt like it was just them
and their problem not my problem. Then one day I realized if
everyone I meet is saying the same thing about me and my attitude
then it must be true. There is just no way that everyone got together
behind my back and planned on telling me that I had a bad attitude.
That is when I decided that I had the problem. The next step was to
figure out how to solve the problem. First, I had to identify why I had
a bad attitude. I had to look inward to see what it was that could
cause it. I was a heavy drug user, but drugs made me feel good, so I
decided that was not the issue. Over time and through deep self-
reflection I was able to see that because of certain traumas and
situations in my life, there was lingering pain. Due to this pain, I
would end up hurting people. Putting the phrase hurt people, hurt
people into a real-life example for me. I turned to God, and he told
me that I had a lot of issues, but he was going to help me overcome
them one thing at a time because if we did them all at once I would
become overwhelmed and give up. That is exactly what I did. I go
into his word and start changing on the inside. This leads to our
article that we read about the different views people have on
counselors who are Christians. “The unease appears to be largely
focused upon Christianity and involves topics such as same-sex
relationships and marriage, abortion, sexual abuse, transgender
identity, and other concerns that also represent significant political
and social concerns throughout the world” (Evans et al, 2021). People
have this view that Christians do not experience things such as those
listed above. This is not true. All people go through many of these
types of things. We all must look inward and do the inside work to
overcome or learn to live with certain things. This to me is the best
qualification for a counselor. It is reassuring to hear that your
counselor has gone through the same issue that you are currently
going through. People are more receptive to advice if they know you
have been through a similar situation.
